Daily itinerary

Day 1

Day 1 - Silver Circle and Lava Caving Adventure

Your West Coast adventure begins with a morning pick-up in Reykjavik. There, you'll meet your expert guide, who will accompany you throughout the trip. This marks the beginning of your itinerary for 2 days in Snaefellsnes Peninsula, taking you through some of Iceland’s diverse landscapes.

The first stop is the village of Bifrost, surrounded by ancient lava and volcanic craters. Nearby, you’ll visit Glanni Waterfall, a peaceful cascade flowing over dark rocks with the Grabrok Craters rising in the background.

You’ll travel through Borgarfjordur Fjord to visit Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. It produces over 47.5 gallons (180 liters) of boiling water every second.

From there, you'll visit Hraunfossar Waterfall, also known as “Lava Waterfalls.” It’s a series of waterfalls that flow over 2,953 feet (900 meters) of lava rocks. The clear water flows gently over lava rocks and into the Hvita River.

A short walk away is Barnafoss Waterfall, where water crashes through a narrow rocky path. This spot has a long history, and a sad legend gives the place its name, "The Waterfall of the Children."

The main highlight of the day is a guided tour of Vidgelmir Lava Cave, one of the largest lava caves in Iceland. This massive tunnel stretches nearly 5,250 feet (1,600 meters) beneath the earth.

During the 1.5-hour tour, you’ll walk along well-lit paths through colorful lava walls, strange rock shapes, and icy patches. You’ll see lava stalactites and stalagmites, and learn how volcanic eruptions long ago created this underground world.

You’ll then arrive in the woodland oasis of Husafell, surrounded by birch groves, waterfalls, lava fields, and crystal-clear springs. It is also home to the legendary Husafell Stone, once used to test the strength of Icelandic strongmen.

Before the day ends, you’ll visit Reykholt, one of Iceland’s most important historical sites. Here, you can see Snorralaug, a small hot spring where people have bathed since the 12th century, linked to the writer and chieftain Snorri Sturluson. You’ll also visit a wooden church from the 1800s, where a glass window shows old ruins beneath the floor.

After a full day of exploration, settle in at your accommodation in West Iceland to relax and recharge. Your 2-day tour of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is only halfway through, with more to see tomorrow. In winter, you might even spot the northern lights before the night ends.

Day 2

Day 2 - Snaefellsnes Peninsula and Its Natural Wonders

On Day 2, your West Coast journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Borgarnes. From here, you'll head into the heart of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” for its incredible mix of landscapes.

You’ll then enter Snaefellsjokull National Park, to see the glacier-capped Snaefellsjokull Volcano. With its twin peaks, this landmark has inspired myths and literature, including Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”

Next is Ytri Tunga, a farm by the sea with a golden sand beach. It’s a great place to see seals, which often rest on the rocks or swim near the shore year-round.

Your 2-day Snaefellsnes itinerary includes a visit to the black church at Budir. Its dark color and quiet setting create a peaceful contrast to the wild scenery around it. Plus, it’s a great spot to pause and take a few memorable photos.

As the drive continues along the coast, you’ll arrive at the small fishing village of Arnarstapi. Here, you can take a coastal walk with views of Gatklettur, a naturally formed rock arch shaped by the Atlantic waves.

Continue to Djupalonssandur Black Sand Beach, where shipwreck remnants line the shore. Test your strength at the old lifting stones that fishermen once used to show they were strong enough to work at sea.

Nearby, you’ll see the Londrangar Cliffs rise like towers from the shore. These sharp basalt formations are home to seabirds during summer.

The last stop is Kirkjufell Mountain. Its sharp, pointed shape has become one of Iceland’s most photographed sights. With the Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall close by and a clear view of the sea and sky, it’s a picture-perfect ending to the day’s adventure.

After a day of beaches, cliffs, and mountains, you’ll drive back to Reykjavik. You’ll reach the city in the evening, ending your two-day West Coast tour.
