Ride a super jeep into Thorsmork, the Valley of Thor, on this private day tour from Hvolsvollur, with a hike up Valahnukur Mountain and a stop at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall.
Thorsmork is a nature reserve in the southern Highlands between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajokull, the glacier volcano whose 2010 eruption disrupted air traffic across Europe, Myrdalsjokull, and Tindfjallajokull. It's known for its ice-capped peaks, jagged ridges, and valleys with moss and birch woodland.
The route to Thorsmork has many unbridged river crossings with deep, fast-flowing water that often trap unmodified rental cars. That's why you travel in a super jeep, a modified vehicle with huge tires that can cross rivers and handle almost any terrain.
Your first stop is Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, 197 feet (60 meters) high, where you can walk behind the falling water, and the spray can reach you.
Next, you visit Gigjokull Glacier, an outlet of Eyjafjallajokull. A glacial lagoon once lay beneath it, but it was destroyed by flooding in the 2010 eruption, so today you can drive on the former lagoon bed almost up to the glacier.
In Thorsmork, you visit Basar in Godaland, "the land of the gods," one of the most sheltered parts of the area. It's an oasis of natural birch woods, with hiking trails through valleys and gorges in every direction.
You also hike up Valahnukur Mountain, a relatively easy climb of 722 feet (220 meters). From the top, you see valleys and gorges covered with moss and birch forest, glacial rivers, and Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull Glaciers.
Thorsmork has more beautiful places than you can see in one day, so ask your guide to show you their favorite spot. At the end of the day, you're driven back to Hvolsvollur.
