Get deep into the ethereal Þórsmörk Mountain Reserve with a local expert and enjoy 4 hours of hiking in the untouched wilderness. This tour is for anyone who wants to explore the jaw-dropping panoramic views of Þórsmörk on foot.

Þórsmörk is one of Iceland’s gems. The landscape is dramatic as is its name; Þórsmörk means “Valley of Thor”, named after the Viking Thunder God. It’s located in south Iceland, nestled between three volcanic glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull, Tindfjallajökull and the famous Eyjafjallajökull. You will view the mind-blowing wilderness and landscapes while breathing in the fresh mountain air.

The tour departs from the town of Hvolsvöllur, but you can add on a pickup from Reykjavík during the booking process. On your way into Þórsmörk, you'll stop at some beautiful locations such as Gígjökull, an outlet glacier from the larger Eyjafjallajökull. The landscape in this area changed dramatically in 2010 when a volcano under Eyjafjallajökull erupted, causing massive glacial floods that consumed the region.

You will drive from location to location in a super jeep, a specially adapted vehicle capable of handling rough terrain and unbridged rivers. The jeep allows you to experience the magnificent power and colours of the highlands, with canyons, hanging glaciers and glacial rivers all around, set amongst birch trees and vivid green moss-clad rocks.

Once in Þórsmörk, you'll hike through this magnificent valley, accompanied by your driver and guide who is more than happy to share their knowledge of Icelandic nature, as well as the strange traditions and folklore surrounding the region.

So lace up your hiking boots and come along on an adventure in the highlands. Visit the magnificent Þórsmörk valley on this fun-filled super jeep tour. Check availability by choosing a date.

Fantastic trip to a beautiful, green & serene part of the country! Our guide picked us up from Midgard's base / hostel in Hvolsvollur (also a great place to stay, instead of making the trek all the way from Reykjavik in one day) and after a brief introduction to the history and geology of the area took us into the valley. We had great weather, so took the opportunity to check out some of the smaller waterfalls along the way (which rarely get any visitors it looked like!), before hiking into a beautiful green canyon with a hidden waterfall at the end (Stakkholtsgjá), a partial ice cave in what remains of a glacier lagoon, in between some exciting but expertly handled river crossings in our super jeep. Had some lunch at the picturesque huts at Básar, followed by a short hike around the area to get a sense of the local geography and geology. Definitely reccomended!

What a great trip! I planned a weekend getaway with my boyfriend to be spent in Þórsmörk valley (one of my favourite areas in Iceland), and instead of getting the bus into Þórsmörk we started off with this day tour and then asked to be dropped off before they'd return to Hvolsvöllur. We had an amazing day, our guide Þórir was really fun and knowledgeable, we spent a while exploring a former glacier lagoon (even saw the remains of an ice cave), then drove to Básar for some lunch and a hike around that area with views over the valley. And then finally hiked the whole way into Stakkholtsgjá canyon and to the waterfall that's at the bottom of it. I've been meaning to go to Stakkholtsgjá for a long time, but you need to have a 4x4 (and a good driver) to get there, so I managed to tick that off my bucket list. Krossá river had an exceptionally high river flow when we were there, but Þórir very expertly got us across safe and sound. Our group was also very friendly and fun, and the weather was fantastic which always helps :) This was my second tour with Midgard Adventure, and I can't recommend them enough - I also recommend checking out their base camp where you can get great food, and comfy beds if you want to spend the night (plus a hot tub on the balcony).
