Þórsmörk is one of Iceland’s gems. The landscape is dramatic as is its name; Þórsmörk means “Valley of Thor”, named after the Viking Thunder God. It’s located in south Iceland, nestled between three volcanic glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull, Tindfjallajökull and the famous Eyjafjallajökull. You will view the mind-blowing wilderness and landscapes while breathing in the fresh mountain air.
The tour departs from the town of Hvolsvöllur, but you can add on a pickup from Reykjavík during the booking process. On your way into Þórsmörk, you'll stop at some beautiful locations such as Gígjökull, an outlet glacier from the larger Eyjafjallajökull. The landscape in this area changed dramatically in 2010 when a volcano under Eyjafjallajökull erupted, causing massive glacial floods that consumed the region.
You will drive from location to location in a super jeep, a specially adapted vehicle capable of handling rough terrain and unbridged rivers. The jeep allows you to experience the magnificent power and colours of the highlands, with canyons, hanging glaciers and glacial rivers all around, set amongst birch trees and vivid green moss-clad rocks.
Once in Þórsmörk, you'll hike through this magnificent valley, accompanied by your driver and guide who is more than happy to share their knowledge of Icelandic nature, as well as the strange traditions and folklore surrounding the region.
