Jump aboard this whale-watching excursion to see the incredible wealth of marine wildlife just off Reykjavík’s shores. This tour is a must for nature-lovers, and fits perfectly into a busy holiday; you leave straight from the capital city’s Old Harbour and return approximately three hours later.

You will arrive at the harbour in good time for your departure, either by making your way there yourself or through a pick-up you can request during booking. If taking this trip during summer, you will have a choice between two boats, which you can select based on your sense of adventure and the nature of your group.

The first vessel, and the only one operated year-round, is one of the largest whale-watching boats in Iceland. It has a fantastic educational and interactive focus on board, where you can learn more about the whales, as well as a café.

The second vessel is one of our newest additions to the fleet, a fast-cruising catamaran. It promises to get you to the prime whale-watching location in just twenty minutes so that you can immerse yourself in the activity immediately. These express tours are only available during the summer months. Trips on this tour are approximately an hour shorter.

On the first boat, you will spend roughly three hours out on the ocean looking for whales (approx. two hours on the second). As you travel out, your guide will point out the natural features surrounding the capital; in clear weather, you should be able to see both the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Snæfellsnes peninsula, as well as the ‘whale fjord’, otherwise called Hvalfjörður.

Four species can be regularly seen on these tours: harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, Minke Whales and Humpback Whales. It is not at all unheard of, however, to see orcas (or killer whales), pilot whales, Fin Whales, and even Basking Sharks. On top of these incredible animals, during summer you can expect to see a wealth of seabirds, most notably including the puffin. Your experienced guides can answer any questions you have as you hunt for and marvel over these majestic creatures.

Each tour yields entirely different results. The animals’ behaviour change throughout the day; you might catch them breaching, socialising, feeding or just basking near the surface. If by chance, you are not lucky enough to see a marine mammal, you will have another opportunity to take this tour for free until you do.

You will return to Reykjavík after three hours on the sea, hopefully after many exciting sightings and an up-close look at some of Iceland’s marvellous creatures. Because of the convenience and length of this tour, there will still be plenty of opportunities to make the most of the rest of your day, either on another tour or within the capital.

Do not miss your chance to see the magnificent whales, dolphins and porpoises of Iceland. Set sail into Faxaflói bay for your opportunity. Check availability by choosing a date.

Fantastic trip and while driving a lot, the experience and excitement is worth it. Having our 5 and 8 year old with us, it was always about “where are we headed next” and today Geysir, Rain, Wind, Laveshow is clear in all our thoughts:)

The guide knew what he was talking about. The sea was really rough so they provided us with sea sick tablets. Which was kind. We saw a whale and a bunch of dolphins.

Great tour! Within a span of 2 hours, saw around 10 whales; ended up seeing a shark too, which is generally rare as per the guide.

An exciting experience -- my kids were thrilled to see so many whales so close to the boat.

This Whale Watching Tour from Reykjavik was definetly one of my personal highlights from my trip to Iceland! The weather at the day of the Tour wasn't perfect, but luckily whales don't care about stuff like that. The (light) rain didn't stop anyone from taking great pictures or from seeing the whales. Plus, as our really nice and informative Tour Guide told us it is actually easier to spot whales, when the sun doesn't reflect so much on the water. Besides there were waterproof suits available at the lower deck, that protected you from the rain, if you didn't bring proper clothing...or if you just wanted some better protection against the wind and water. Sadly some of the suits were already wet on the inside, so putting them on would have been a bit contraproductive. Luckily I brought a little towel and just dried the suit with that, before putting it on. I still recommend to dress according to the weather, but if you don't have proper clothing, the suits are actually better than anything you could bring yourself. The Tour itself was super nice and relaxing. You could sit down in the inside of the boat, or stand outside admiring the ocean. The Tour Guide kept you informed about everything you needed to know, especially when a whale or doplhins showed up. The crew was really trying to make it a wonderful experience for everyone, keeping us informed where around the boat we can see the animals and where there is free space to get a good look. But all the other Tourists, where so nice as well, taking turns at the railing of the ship to make sure that people who arrived later on deck could see the whales too. In the meantime the crew tried to stay near the animals for a while, getting near them, but always respecting it's freedom. I really, really enjoyed that day and after the Tour I did the Whales of Iceland Exhibition. Their staff was so friendly and the exhibition is a wonderful way to conclude an adventure like that. Plus you learn a lot about whales and can enjoy a little coffe, tea or hot chocolate at the same time.

Tour was great - the guide on the boat was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We saw 7 or 8 whales as well as puffins and a few porpoises. Our whole family (adults and children) enjoyed ourselves immensely.

The guide was competent and gave clear explanations about the watching, the sort of animals we we were seeing and the idea of an explanation with the whale’s bones is great

Though we weren't very lucky with the weather, the tour itself was great - the personnel very friendly and knowledgeable and the ship was fitted out with everything you might need (we were very happy to have the warm overalls offered to passengers). And we saw some whales and lots of interesting birds :).

Fabulous experience. Very helpful knowledgeable guides; we saw dolphins, minke whales and a humpback about 10 meters from the bow of the boat. Thoroughly enjoyed this tour
