Your tour begins at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. You get a flotation suit and a life jacket before boarding. Zodiac boats are small, fast, and easy to maneuver, so your guide can cover more of the lagoon and get closer to the icebergs while always keeping a safe distance. When possible, the boat goes almost all the way up to the glacier.
As you cross the water, you see ancient ice that has broken away from Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, an outlet glacier of Vatnajokull Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. The icebergs drift slowly through the lagoon toward the ocean, changing shape, color, and position with the tides. Their blue tones, streaks of white, and shapes make every trip different.
The lagoon began to form in the 1930s as Breidamerkurjokull Glacier retreated, and it has kept growing since. Today, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is the deepest lake in Iceland and one of the country's best-known sights. In good conditions, you may spot seals swimming between the icebergs or resting on the ice, and seabirds above the lagoon. Photographers can capture the floating ice, the surrounding glacier landscape, and nearby Diamond Beach, where pieces of ice wash ashore on the black sand.
