A day exploring with Ice Guide
🇬🇧
Exploring ice caves and walking on top of glaciers is something I never get tired of doing and that's why I returned in March to the same places I was in early January but this time I joined Ice Guide.
Ice Guide is a small family business located in the town of Höfn in South East Iceland.
This time I stayed at a guesthouse in Höfn because I wanted to explore the area a bit and visit places that I hadn't been to for many years.
I left Reykjavík early on a Friday so that I could stop along the way and visit some places and also make the journey to Höfn in a relaxed manner.
From Reykjavík to Höfn it takes about 6 hours driving.
When I got to Höfn it was already night and I was tired from the trip so I decided to go to sleep right away so I would be fine the next day.
The next morning I woke up early, got ready with comfortable and warm clothes and also prepared everything I was going to take with me on the tour and started my trip to Jökulsárlón.
My guide that day was Bjarni. Bjarni is an amazing human being and super fun! He has been doing this for many years and therefore has a lot of experience in glaciers and ice caves.
You are indeed very lucky if you happen to go on a tour with him because he shows how passionate he is about what he does and also because he is very careful with us and knows many things that he is constantly telling and explaining throughout the tour. (Bjarni you are the best!) 😊
We left the meeting point at the scheduled time towards the glacier and on this tour we were only 6 people! That was one of the things I loved about Ice Guide, the fact that it was a small group and not having to go with a crowd. The tour turns out to be more private and it is another type of attention that is given to you. This is definitely a big plus at this company!
When we reached the glacier valley Bjarni gave us the necessary safety equipment such as spikes to put on our boots and helmet and we started our trek to the glacier.
This time the day was gray and foggy, and it was snowing very finely and lightly and there was no wind which gave it a mystical vibe. It was a perfect day even though it was snowing.
During the walk to the first ice cave I came across several ice formations as well as huge cracks and holes!
Incredible! 😮
When we got to the ice cave it was snowing a lot!
It looked so beautiful. I felt like I was inside one of those glass balls, you know?
We went down to the ice cave and it was very different from the last time I was there. Some parts had already melted, others had formed in the meantime but even so, it continued with the same beauty and magic.
It is sad to think that in an estimated 50 years none of this will exist anymore!
After exploring this cave for at least 1 hour, we went to visit another one, the Sapphire Ice Cave, which, like Bellissimo, was also very different since January.
The entrance I entered in January had fallen down and another entrance to the cave would have been made in the meantime.
We also had a lot of time exploring this ice cave and this time I walked inside it all the way to the end, where at a certain point I had to crouch down as the ceiling was so low!
It was an unforgettable day with Bjarni and Ice Guide and I can't wait to join them again for more adventures soon!
🇵🇹
