I Explored an Ice Cave!
I Explored a ice cave!
Last friday i took the day off and drove to Vík, a small village in South Iceland located by the famous black sand beach Reynisfjara, where my tour would be.
The drive to Vík from Reykjavík is around 2 hours 30 minutes in good road conditions.
The tour was booked for 2pm but I left Reykjavík pretty early because the plan was to stop by the famous Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls to take some photos. Also the weather wasn’t that good, was raining a lot and the visibility was very poor so in these conditions you want to do things with time and drive carefully.
The meeting point for my tour was at The Soup Company Restaurant in Vík and I still had the time to enjoy a drink before the adventurous drive up to the highlands. Right after, the guides were waiting outside as well as our super jeep ride to the glorious Katla Volcano Ice Cave!
What a bumpy ride it was!
The drive from Vík to the ice cave takes about 40-45min and the 4×4 Super-Jeep drove us through the old ring road! The views are insane! The day was quite dark and foggy giving that mistic vibe. Was so gorgeous seeing the black sand desert and the mountains in that foggy conditions. We even crossed a small river to the ice cave and it was so cool!
As soon as we got to our destination, we were given a helmet and crampons to wear before hiking to the glaciar.
After a short hike, there it was! The mighty Katla Ice Cave!
I started to climb it and as I was getting closer to it, i felt like a kid, full of excitment on Christmas Eve! So pretty!
The stunning ice formations and its beautiful marbled lines of ash that reside in the ice from previous volcanic eruptions are marvellous!
Sadly was raining so much and it was quite dark so we couldn’t see those beautiful cristal blue colors but I will surely come back later when the days are colder!
