I recently had the pleasure of dining at Skál!, a restaurant that has quickly become a beloved spot in downtown Reykjavik. Originally nestled in Hlemmur Mathöll, Iceland’s first food hall, Skál! relocated to Njálsgata 1 in 2024, offering a fresh yet familiar experience for its guests.
I opted for the 8-course chef’s choice menu, a culinary journey that showcased the creativity and skill of the kitchen. Each dish was meticulously prepared and bursting with flavor. The slow-roasted celeriac with cured egg yolk, pear, rye bread, and brown butter was a standout, offering a harmonious blend of textures and tastes.
Equally impressive was the lamb prime accompanied by celeriac, parsley, and black garlic, a dish that perfectly highlighted the richness of Icelandic lamb.
However, the warm garlic bread with herb butter truly stole the show; it was, without a doubt, the best garlic bread I’ve ever had, a mind-blowing experience for the taste buds!
The staff at Skál! were exceptional, providing attentive and personalized service ( Zilia was a sweetheart through all the experience!) They took the time to explain each dish, enhancing the overall dining experience. The music selection added to the ambiance, blending seamlessly with the restaurant’s vibe and making the evening even more enjoyable.
Attention to detail is evident throughout Skál!, extending even to the restrooms. They are stocked with products from Angan, an Icelandic skincare brand known for its high-quality products such as hand soaps and lotions. The space is also adorned with candles from Haf Store, emitting a heavenly scent that perfectly complements the restaurant’s atmosphere. It’s these thoughtful touches that elevate the overall experience and demonstrate the care put into every aspect of the establishment.
Skál! also offers a lunch menu, however with a more limited selection compared to dinner. Nevertheless, the options available are thoughtfully curated and maintain the high standards set by the evening offerings.
The wine and cocktail selection is impressive, featuring natural wines, Icelandic beers, house-brewed sparkling teas, and craft cocktails. Each beverage is carefully chosen to complement the menu, ensuring a harmonious pairing with the dishes.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend taking the time to immerse yourself in the culinary journey that Skál! offers. It’s an experience that will undoubtedly transport your taste buds to another dimension, leaving you with lasting memories and a desire to return for more.
