Day 14 and 15 of 3 week Iceland trip
Follow my wife and me on a 3-week trip of Iceland with a camper van.
Day 14 in Iceland: From Landmannalaugar to Skaftafell (191km)
Today the weather was much better again. We took the F208 and then F233 because we wanted more river crossings. At one of the crossings we came to a wide river with a strong current. We were lucky 3 Icelandic 4x4 had just crossed and could tell us where to drive. It was an exciting crossing with big rocks and our camper was rocked to both sides, some rocks hit the bottom, and we made it safely to the other side.
From now on the road was easy, and from the F210 we come on the road number 1. The camping at Skaftafell was busy, but there was plenty of space.
Day 15: Driving from Skaftafell to Kirkjubæjarklaustur (199 km)
Today there was solid cloud cover; we could not see the mountaintops. We drove to Svínafellsjökull. The glacier and the lake were beautiful in the mist. The glacier was close; we decided to stay well away from the falling ice blocs.
We continued to Jökulsárlón and on our way we stopped at Fjallsárlón, which we liked very much. It was less busy.
The Jökulsárlón was definitely a must see in Iceland, the ice floating close to the bridge over the river to the sea. There are possibilities to make a rib or amphibian truck tour over the lake close to the ice.
At Kirkjubæjarklaustur we did our shopping again, the shops here had plenty of choice.
An Icelandic youngster helped me top up my Síminn Data card, by allowing me on his personal wifi. We had dinner at the local restaurant, which was quite busy. We enjoyed a burger.
