Guide de Voyage : Sources Chaudes de Hvammsvik
The Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs is a set of naturally heated pools that forms one of Iceland’s newest geothermal bathing experiences. Located in Hvalfjordur, a fjord close to Reykjavik, they are a must-visit attraction for those looking to connect with Icelandic nature.
Iceland has many of the best hot springs and geothermal spas worldwide. You can easily book admission to the Hvammsvik Hot Spring, bathe in the Blue Lagoon, or seek out natural pools on a self-drive tour. Many accommodation options are right on the doorstep of these fantastic attractions.
The Hvammsvik Hot Springs distinguish themselves from other hot springs by combining a spa experience with bathing in nature. The eight geothermal pools are surrounded by rocks and nestled in the hills over 1200 acres (486 hectares) of beautiful nature.
There is also a restaurant and bar on-site and a resort with a wealth of activities, such as yoga, fishing, hiking, paddle boarding, golf, northern lights hunting, and cycling. The Hvammsvik Retreat also provides four log cabins for those who want a more extended stay.
The Hvammsvik Hot Springs is open from 11:00 to 21:00.
Location of the Hvammsvik Hot Springs
The Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs are 40 miles (54.7 kilometers) northeast of Reykjavik, on the shore of Hvalfjordur. This location translates to the ‘whale fjord,’ and though it is not renowned for its whales, it is home to many birds and seals.
In summer, it has spectacular flora, while its waterfalls form frozen sculptures in winter.
A visit to the Hvammsvik Hot Springs can easily be included on a day trip around many other sites. Iceland’s second-tallest waterfall, Glymur, is only 10.9 miles (17.6 kilometers) away.
Hvammsvik is also close to the Golden Circle, Iceland’s most popular sightseeing route. The legendary Thingvellir National Park is 25.2 miles (40.5 kilometers) southeast, from which you can continue onto the Geysir geothermal area and the Gullfoss waterfall.
Getting to the Hvammsvik Hot Springs
From Reykjavik, you can easily reach the Hvammsvik Hot Springs by car. Drive north along the Ring Road, or Route 1, until you reach the Hvalfjordur tunnel. Instead of paying the toll to drive through it, turn right onto Route 47 and follow it until you see the attraction on the left.
If you are staying in Borgarnes, the largest town in West Iceland, do the exact opposite. Travel south along Route 1, left onto Route 47, and the Hvammsik Hot Springs will be on your right.
You cannot reach the Hvammsvik Hot Springs by public transport, but you can book a private tour of West Iceland and have a driver escort you here.
Activities at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs
At the Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs, geothermal bathing is the main activity, and the eight hot springs are all accessible with standard admission. The pools vary in temperature, from 95 to 104 F (35 to 40 C), and size. You will also find a steam bath to relax in.
You can rent towels, swimwear, and swimming slippers for a small cost.
Hot spring bathing, however, is just the tip of the iceberg of things to do at Hvammsvik. You are also welcome to go swimming in the ocean in summer, and there are regularly scheduled paddle-boarding sessions throughout the season.
There is a small lake where you can fish for rainbow trout if you stay at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs accommodation. Bike rentals are available for those eager to cycle the routes from the Hvammsvik hot springs, and the staff can guide you to the nearest hiking and walking trails.
Those who would prefer to relax on their retreat should book a Wim Hof breathing workshop. This practice can include cold water therapies and is excellent for those interested in mindfulness and finding inner peace.
Other yoga workshops are offered throughout the year, and the retreat hosts occasional concerts.
Guests can enjoy food and drinks at the Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs by visiting the Stormur Bistro and Bar.
Golfers will find the Brautarholt golf course 17.8 miles (28.6 kilometers) west.
Northern Lights at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs
If you are traveling and want to see the northern lights in Iceland, the Hvammsvik Hot Springs are a fantastic option. Because the pools are open until 21:00 and there are few sources of light pollution in the area, you could see the aurora borealis vividly from the comfort of the geothermal waters.
The northern lights can be seen between September and April, although you’ll have more chance to see them in midwinter when the nights are longer. For example, Iceland can experience up to 20 hours of darkness in December and January.
Of course, the sky needs to be clear, and the forecast needs to be strong for good viewing. You can check the conditions on Iceland’s weather website before booking. If you are not fortunate enough to see the northern lights in the Hvammsvik Hot Springs, you can book plenty of northern lights tours for another shot.
If you are traveling to Iceland in summer, you won’t see the aurora borealis. Instead, however, you can enjoy the Hvammsvik Hot Springs in full sunlight due to the phenomenon of the midnight sun.
