5 Local Tips for a Blue Lagoon First-Time Visit

Visiting the Blue Lagoon is, without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Iceland. Its warm geothermal water and distinctive blue color make it a must for many travelers, but it’s not like visiting a regular swimming pool.

These are some things I recommend keeping in mind if you're a first-time Blue Lagoon visitor.

1. Protect your hair and remove jewelry

The Blue Lagoon is rich in silica and minerals that are great for your skin, but can leave hair dry and brittle. Apply conditioner thoroughly to your hair and keep it in when entering the water. There's complimentary shampoo and conditioner in the shower stalls.

Also, keep long hair tied up when possible. I didn't do a good enough job of this the first time I visited, and it took a few days for my hair texture to return to normal!

I also recommend removing jewelry, as the minerals can damage or discolor metals.

2. Book your Blue Lagoon entry and transport in advance

You can generally expect the Blue Lagoon to sell out, especially in summer and during busy travel periods. I recommend booking your entry early and scheduling your visit near the start of your trip.

If you are not renting a car in Iceland, book a Blue Lagoon shuttle bus in advance or make sure you have a designated driver, as alcohol is available in the lagoon.

3. Choose your timing wisely

Evenings at the Blue Lagoon are often quieter than midday, and during winter, you may even be lucky enough to see the northern lights while soaking. Early morning visits can also offer a calmer atmosphere, making both times ideal if you prefer a more relaxed experience.

4. Explore beyond the swim-up bar

It is tempting to stay near the bar area, but the lagoon is huge and has several quieter corners. Take the time to explore for more private spots, especially if you want a more relaxed and peaceful experience.

5. Explore the rest of the Reykjanes Peninsula

In my opinion, the Reykjanes Peninsula is one of the most underrated regions of Iceland, and trips to the Blue Lagoon are the perfect excuse to explore more of the area. Kleifarvatn Lake is one of my favorite spots near the capital, with a striking volcanic landscape like the Seltún Geothermal Area, which many travelers overlook.

If you've rented a car in Reykjavik, I recommend taking a slightly longer route to or from the Blue Lagoon to drive the beautiful winding road beside the lake.

There are many geothermal spas in Iceland, including Sky LagoonHvammsvik Hot Springs, and my personal favorite, the Forest Lagoon in the North, but the Blue Lagoon remains the most iconic of them all. With these tips, you can enjoy it while also discovering more of Iceland beyond the lagoon itself!
