Berunes HI Hostel is a charming farmhouse located in the East Iceland region, boasting an impressive view of a mountain range on one side and a seafront on the other. Travelers seeking a quick trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city will enjoy its quiet and remote location.
Location & Nearby
Located near the small town of Djupivogur, north of Berufjordur fjord, Berunes HI Hostel is nestled in Iceland's most picturesque mountains and seas. Due to its proximity to these landscapes, you will have the best of both worlds.
If you are up for some adventures, hiking is one great activity. Meanwhile, if you just want some peace and quiet, you may take a quick stroll from the hostel and enjoy the cold breeze of the sea.
While Berunes is perfect for those who want a quick rest while traversing the eastern side of the ring road, it is a great destination in its own right. The Eastfjords is known for its mountain peaks, magnificent waterfalls, and rich wildlife.
You might consider going to Lake Lagarfljot and Hengifoss Waterfall, which are 48 miles (77 kilometers) and 60 miles (96 kilometers) away from the hostel, respectively. If you are lucky enough, you might even see some seals on the beach and herds of reindeer inland.
Other great attractions near the Berunes HI Hostel include Papey Island, Thvotta farm, and Mt. Sandfell.
Meanwhile, Djupivogur might be small in size, but it offers more than what's expected. Great shops and restaurants like Framtid and Vid Voggin are found here. While in town, you may also take a side trip to see the iconic public artwork called ‘The Eggs of Merry Bay.’
Facilities & Amenities
Berunes HI Hostel might have been built at the beginning of the last century, but it still offers modern facilities and rooms. Truth be told, there is nothing better than an old farmhouse retrofitted as a hostel. Somehow, its rustic yet warm appearance adds to its overall charm.
Newer buildings for accommodation have also been added to the mix. Additional facilities include a fully-equipped kitchen and a living room with a fireplace. All guests are allowed to use these facilities to their satisfaction.
All in all, Berunes can accommodate up to 65 people. Travelers can choose from double rooms and family rooms that may either have a shared or private bathroom. All rooms have access to free Wi-Fi.
While you're there, breakfast is served every morning, which can be arranged upon booking or at arrival. You also have the option to dine in at either the onsite or nearby cafe and bar that have dinner options.
If you happen to be visiting during summertime, you are in for a treat. Reykjavik's famous restaurant, Forrettabarinn, will pop up at Berunes, serving an ever-changing menu featuring local delicacies and ingredients.
