Location & Nearby
The Hrimland Cottages are situated only three miles (five kilometers) from central Akureyri, the largest town in North Iceland. This settlement has a range of services for travelers, such as grocery stores, restaurants, tour information centers, and gas stations. Akureyri is also known for its boutiques and cultural attractions, such as the Hof Cultural Center, a botanical garden, a golf course, and swimming pools.
The town is also one of the whale-watching centers of Europe, with operators often boasting 100 percent success ratings throughout the summer. Eyjafjordur, the fjord Akureyri is adjacent to, is home to white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises throughout the year and humpback whales and puffins in summer. You could even see rare creatures like blue whales, belugas, and orcas.
The Hlidarfjoll ski resort is even closer than Akureyri, just two miles (three kilometers) away, making the Hrimland Cottages perfect for those looking for a mountain adventure.
You can drive to the many other sites of North Iceland from the cottages with ease, such as those on the famous Diamond Circle sightseeing route. The nearest feature of this trail is the historical site and spectacular waterfall of Godafoss, which is 24 miles (38.5 kilometers) east. The furthest is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss, 73 miles (117 kilometers) further.
Between the two, you can find the spectacular Lake Myvatn area, a beautiful place with enormous bodies of water, abundant birdlife, and some spectacular geological and geothermal sites. Detouring from the route a little will take you to the town of Husavik, another excellent whale-watching port, and the striking canyon of Asbyrgi.
From the Hrimland Cottages, you can also visit lesser-known sites of North Iceland, including the Beer Spa and Glaumbaer turf houses. These attractions are 23 miles (37 kilometers) and 65 miles (104 kilometers) away.
Facilities and Amenities
The Hrimland Cottages can accommodate eight guests each, with a spacious double bedroom, another room with two single beds and two bunk beds, and a smaller twin room. All cottages include two bathrooms, providing privacy for all guests, and a fully equipped kitchen, allowing you to self-cater. There is also a spacious living area with a television and a laundry room.
However, the most appealing aspect of the cottages is the large indoor hot tubs where you can make the most of the area’s geothermal activity.
Wifi and parking are free, and the cottages have underfloor heating. The views from the windows of the landscapes of the north are breathtaking.
