Description
The Husey Hostel is a far-flung hostel on a remote bay in the Eastfjords, surrounded by spectacular wilderness. Travellers to east Iceland seeking to escape far off the beaten track will love their stay here.
Location & Nearby
The Husey Hostel is located on a horse-farm, with no other buildings in sight. Within walking distance are a black sand beach, a glacial river, and unspeakably beautiful rural bliss against a backdrop of mountains. Plentiful hiking routes will allow you to enjoy these at your leisure, and a reconstructed Viking turf church is nearby.
Travellers staying at the Husey Hostel will likely want to use it as a base to marvel over the wildlife and landscapes of the Eastfjords, with seals, birds and reindeer in the area. They will particularly appreciate its proximity to the fjord region of Borgarfjordur Eystri, one of the region’s most breathtaking places, which can be reached in less than an hour and a half. Stuðlagil and Stórurð are also within reach.
The nearest town is the capital of the East, Egilsstadir, which can be driven to in 50 minutes. From here, you can easily access popular attractions such as Lake Lagarfljot, which is steeped in folklore; Hallormsstadaskogar, the country’s largest forest; and the Vok Baths, a magical geothermal spa. To reach the hostel, leave Route 1 at the Jökulsá á Brú bridge and take road 925, then road 926 to its end; the gravel section is passable by all cars, but there is no public transport.
Facilities & Amenities
The Husey Hostel offers twin rooms and family rooms, for two and three guests each respectively. Their furnishings are comfy and bright, providing a welcoming and cosy ambience, and all boast incredible views of the mountains from their windows. The bathrooms and kitchen are clean, modern and communal.
You are welcome to explore the farm around the hostel to meet the friendly Icelandic horses, and horse riding tours for all levels can be booked by email or phone. Open 1 April to 31 October only.
