Summary
Description
FOR EXPERIENCED RIDERS ONLY
Saddle up and discover the spectacular nature of the Icelandic southwest. This unique day trip is suited for experienced riders wanting a comprehensive tour of the Icelandic countryside.
After being picked up in Reykjavík in the morning, you’ll be taken to the stables in southwestern Iceland where you will meet your guide for the ride and your steed. The Icelandic horse is a unique breed that was brought to this country by Viking settlers over a thousand years ago.
You’ll head out to a trail that takes you past green meadows which are the perfect spot for trying out the Icelandic horse’s unique ‘tölt’ gait. The tölt is a smooth gait, and you’ll feel like you are soaring through the air as you traverse the beautiful countryside.
You’ll continue riding on grassland and follow the river Gljúfurá to an old cemetery that is steeped in both history and folklore. From there, you’ll travel down a hill to the mighty glacial river Ölfusá, the banks of which are comprised of soft, black volcanic sands.
If weather allows, you’ll get incredible panoramic views of the river deltas and the volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, the latter of which erupted last in 2010 and halted all European air traffic for a few days.
As you make your way back, you’ll travel through a bird sanctuary, home to about 70 species of birds. So keep an eye out for waterfowl such as Whooper Swans, Greylag Goose, and Mallards, as well as open country birds like Dunlins and the beloved Golden Plover.
Mount an Icelandic horse and discover the incredible scenery of the Icelandic southwest. Don’t miss your opportunity to get to know these amazing animals. Check availability by choosing a date.
