Scenic 8 Hour Horse Riding & Whale Watching Day Tour with Transfer from Reykjavik

Meet the animals of Iceland in two completely different ways with this combo day tour; ride a beautiful Icelandic horse in the morning, and take a fascinating whale-watching tour in the afternoon. This tour should appeal to anyone with a passion for wildlife, nature and adventure.

Your day will start when you are picked up from Reykjavík, and taken to the farm Vellir near the South Coast for the riding component of this tour. Here, you will meet your guides and group, who will introduce you to the safety equipment and protocols before showing you to your steed for the morning.

Though on first sight, Icelandic horses only appear to be smaller than regular breeds, you will soon notice that they are, in fact, quite special. They are comparatively more curious, social and intelligent, and you will no doubt fall for the one given to you before you even mount.

It does not matter whether you are a complete novice or an experienced rider; there are horses that will suit people of all abilities. If horse-riding is new to you, your guides will allow you to get comfortable before the tour starts properly and will start the pace slow; if you are more experienced, you will have an opportunity for a gallop around during the excursion.

You will ride for up to two hours through beautiful countryside, in view of dramatic mountains and the South Coast. Once you return to the farm, you will have a light lunch, before being driven back to Reykavík.

You’ll arrive at the Old Harbour in time for the early afternoon departure of the whale-watching vessel. As it escorts you out into Faxaflói Bay, the guides on board will tell you all about the scenery unfolding around you.

Not only will you be able to see the skyline of the capital, if the weather is clear you will see the whole of the volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula, the beautiful Hvalfjörður, and the silhouette of the magnificent Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Many species of whale and dolphin call Faxaflói Bay home, so you can hope to see Minke whales, Humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. If you are particularly fortunate, you may also see creatures such as orcas, Fin whales, and even Blue whales.

Between whale sightings, you can admire the seabirds around you, or else head to the comfortable cabin below to warm up with a hot drink or something stronger. You can also purchase snacks and read about the whales of Iceland below the deck.

If you do not see any whales, you need not worry; you will have a chance to redeem your ticket at your next available opportunity for another shot.

After three hours, hopefully filled with multiple sightings, you will be taken back to Reykjavík, in time for any evening plans you have made.
