Description

Discover some of the most beautiful waterfalls in East Iceland on this easy hiking tour from the idyllic town of Seydisfjordur. This 2.5-hour adventure takes you along the Fjardara river, where you'll witness 12 charming waterfalls and other captivating scenery.

Your quick escapade begins when a friendly and trusted guide meets you at the starting point by Fjardarsel, Iceland's oldest operational hydropower plant. From there, you'll walk through beautiful fields with blueberry bushes and other greenery along the Fjardara river.

The Fjardara river is about 3.1 miles (five kilometers) long and has relatively clear water. The river flows down from a mountain pass, eventually reaching Seydisfjordur.

Along the river are beautiful waterfalls varying in size and features. There are about 25 waterfalls along the Fjardara river, 12 of which you will visit on this tour. Unsurpriisnpeople say the river has waterfalls "behind every corner."

As you begin hiking, you'll notice the trail taking an off-beaten serpentine path. You'll also pass through a small forested area and rock belt. If you visit around August, you'll see cranberries, blueberries, and blueberries along the trail. Aside from berries, you may also encounter some sheep bathing in the sun.

One of the many small waterfalls in the area is Udafoss. From afar, you'll see the Udafoss waterfall as if it appeared in the middle of a rocky landscape. More lovely waterfalls will greet you as you continue the trail, adding to the overall beauty of the experience.

Toward the end of the trail, you'll see the stunning Gufufoss waterfall. The name "Gufufoss" translates to "steam waterfall" in Icelandic because of the mist that often envelops the falls, adding to its allure. Gufufoss cascades gracefully down a series of rocky cliffs, creating a mesmerizing display of cascading water.

In terms of appearance, the Gufufoss waterfall is often compared to the larger Skogafoss waterfall. However, unlike some of Iceland's more famous waterfalls, Gufufoss remains relatively secluded. Visiting the waterfall gives you a sense of tranquility and intimacy with nature.

What sets Gufufoss apart is its accessibility and serene ambiance. The viewing area near Gufufoss offers stunning panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It's also an excellent spot for taking pictures that will immortalize your visit to East Iceland.

Your local guide will also share stories about the waterfalls. You'll learn about their history and other interesting facts about the area. After completing the trail, you'll head back to the starting point, carrying the wonderful memories of your Icelandic adventure.
