Witness the marvellous wildlife in the waters just outside Reykjavík with this adventurous Speedboat adventure. This tour is perfect for those seeking out both adrenaline and spectacular nature.
Your RIB speedboat will be waiting for you at the beginning of the tour at the Old Harbour of Reykjavík. There are twelve seats and one guide, guaranteeing a personalized experience, and the suspension in the seats guarantees comfort. Once you are all boarded, you will set out into Faxaflói bay.
Before going out in hunt of whale, dolphins and birdlife, you will rush by some of the major attractions of Reykjavík. The most notable of these are the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre and the Sun Voyager, a coastal sculpture that represents adventure into the unknown.
The animals that you can hope to see on this tour are numerous and plentiful. In terms of whales, minkes and humpbacks are both regularly spotted, the latter being a species noted for its acrobatic surface activities. White-beaked dolphins are also a common sight, and entirely unafraid of boats, as are harbour porpoises, although they are much more cautious.
While cetaceans are undoubtedly the highlight of this trip, you can also expect to see many seabirds, including the charming puffin; this species nest on the islands in Faxaflói bay, which you will head to, with one having so many that the translation of its name is ‘Puffin Island’. It is also not at all unheard of to see seals in the water, and even basking sharks.
For up to an hour and a half, you will zip across the bay, getting much closer to the animals than the larger whale-watch boats. To keep the experience as comfortable as it is exciting, you will be equipped with waterproof overalls, a scarf, a life jacket and goggles.
Even while you are waiting for sightings, riding a RIB speedboat is a great experience, as it is able to achieve adrenaline-pumping speed. The surrounding nature will also be spectacular in clear weather; you’ll have great views of the capital, Hvalfjörður (also called ‘Whale Fjord’), the Reykjanes Peninsula and even the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Once you have enjoyed your trip, with sightings of both whales and birds, you’ll return to the Old Harbour. If you weren’t lucky enough to see anything, another trip can be rearranged for you.
