Day 1 - Into the Glacier | Langjokull Ice Tunnel
Your excursion begins in Reykjavík, where you will be picked up and whisked away up north to your first adventure of ascending into a man-made ice tunnel inside Langjökull Glacier.
Your bus will take you from the capital to your first destination of Deildartunguhver, the hot spring with the highest flow rate in Europe. The water at this natural wonder stays at a piping 207 °F (97°C) all year long, so be careful not to get too close, but do enjoy the unique vegetation and mystic environment that dot the area.
Close by is your next destination of Hraunfossar Falls, a unique formation of cascading glacier water over walls of lava rock. You will then continue to Húsafell in Borgarfjörður Fjord, a sprawling farm estate nesting on the edges of the Icelandic Highlands. After a quick lunch break, you will hop on a specialized glacier vehicle to take you the rest of the way to the second largest ice cap in Iceland, Langjökull Glacier.
Your route will consist of majestic mountains and icy plains, and by this point, you should zip up your warmest jacket and pull on your gloves since you are about to venture inside a frozen fortress. To go inside a glacier is a unique experience, where you will learn all about the geological history of your surroundings, being the glorious past and possible future of the glacier itself.
As you leave the icy fortress, you will begin your way back to the capital, but not before enjoying the sites en route, such as the whale fjord Hvalfjörður and the remains of a WWII army base.
You will arrive back in Reykjavík around dinner time, where you can enjoy the city sights before retreating to your accommodation to get ready for the next day.
Day 2 - The Golden Circle
Your second day will consist of Iceland's earthly delights as you set out from Reykjavík to enjoy the world-renowned sights of the Golden Circle route.
First up is Þingvellir National Park, an official UNESCO World Heritage Site since the park marks the location of Iceland's very first legislative body, Alþingi—arguably the oldest running democratic parliament in the world.
The incredible site is not only for history buffs since its terrain lies on the conjunction of two continental plates. The meeting of two worlds is visible in the gorge of Almannagjá and the crystal clear Silfra Fissure.
After exploring the park to your heart's content, you will continue to Gullfoss Falls, a cascading beast of incredible power and one of the most famous sights of the entire country.
Then, you will be taken to the geothermal valley of Haukadalur, home to bubbling hot springs and the two famous geysers Strokkur and Geysir—one of which is highly active and spouts boiling water 67 feet (20 meters) into the air every few minutes.
By the end of the day, you will be taken back to Reykjavík City, where you will retreat for the night.
Day 3 - Inside the Volcano
On the last day of your adventure, you will complete your excursion of Iceland's elements as you ascend into the colossal magma chamber of a dormant volcano.
After being picked up in Reykjavík, you will head out to the mountain park Bláfjöll that nests just outside the city limits. From there, your destination of Þríhnúkagígur is only a short and scenic hike away.
Once you reach the crater of the ancient and dormant volcano, you are greeted with an elevator crane designed to take you down below the surface. Your guide will help you strap on your harness and helmet as you enter the lift and begin your ascent.
The ascent itself is an experience all on its own as you slowly make your way down nearly 650 feet (200 meters) to the bottom of the crater. This venue is the only place in the world where you enter a magma chamber in such a manner, where instead of worrying about your footing, you can fully enjoy the incredible array of colors and rock formations as you glide down the volcanic tunnel.
The sheer scale of the chamber is also a huge part of its allure—just to give you an idea, you could fit the whole Statue of Liberty inside it. As you leave your lift to explore the vast ground of the volcano, get ready to be in awe of glistening rock formations of green, purple, yellow, red, and violet, all bathed in the blades of light falling from the entrance overhead.
Once you leave this underground paradise to return to the bright world above, you will be treated to a much-deserved bowl of traditional Icelandic meat soup, along with hot beverages and snacks.
You will then hike back to your transport which will take you back to the capital center, where you can reminisce and look through the photos of your wonderful Iceland adventure.
