Description
Explore the remote Westfjords on this guided minibus tour from Reykjavik, with Viking history, a shipwreck, red and golden sand beaches, Dynjandi Waterfall, and the Latrabjarg Bird Cliffs.
The tour runs in summer, from June to mid-September. You travel with a small group and an English-speaking guide, and spend two nights in hotel rooms with private bathrooms.
On day 1, you're picked up in Reykjavik and drive north along the Ring Road. The first stop is Eiriksstadir Museum, a reconstructed Viking longhouse linked to the explorer Leif Eriksson.
Entering the Westfjords, you follow the rugged coastline of Vatnsfjordur Nature Reserve. Not far ahead is the Gardar Shipwreck, its rusted hull resting on a black sand shore below green hills.
The route then leads to Latrabjarg Bird Cliffs, the largest seabird cliffs in Europe, above the meeting point of the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. In summer, puffins often stand along the grassy ledges. The last stop of the day is Breidavik Beach, a wide sweep of golden sand. You spend the night at a hotel in the area.
On day 2, you visit Raudisandur Beach, a 6.2-mile (10-kilometer) stretch of red- and gold-tinted sand colored by crushed scallop shells, rare on Iceland's mostly black sand coastline.
From there, the road leads into Fossfjordur Valley and on to Dynjandi Waterfall, a series of cascades that looks like a layered cake. You then stop at the wooden pier in Onundarfjordur Fjord, with turquoise water, white sand, and mountain views.
Next, you climb to the Bolafjall Viewing Platform, 2,086 feet (636 meters) above the ocean-facing fjords. The day ends in Isafjordur, the largest town in the Westfjords, where you spend the night.
On day 3, you visit Osvor Maritime Museum, a restored 19th-century fishing station with turf huts and preserved rowboats, and the red-orange Osholar Lighthouse nearby.
You then start the return journey along the Seven Fjords Route, stopping at the Arctic Fox Center, a research center dedicated to Iceland's only native land mammal, and the Hvitanes Seal Colony, where seals rest on the coastal rocks.
Your last stop in the Westfjords is the Gervidalsa Stream, before you drive back to Reykjavik.
