Explore the landscapes around Lake Myvatn and visit a series of waterfalls on this tour of North Iceland from Akureyri in a 4x4 vehicle.
The tour begins in the morning, when your local guide picks you up in Akureyri in a 4x4 vehicle that can reach rugged places off the beaten path.
Your first stop is Godafoss Waterfall, the "Waterfall of the Gods," one of the most historically significant waterfalls in Iceland. It is about 100 feet (30 meters) wide and drops about 39 feet (12 meters) into a horseshoe-shaped canyon.
You can walk along the paths and viewing platforms on both sides of the river to see the waterfall from different angles.
Next, you head to the Lake Myvatn area. Formed by a lava eruption around 2,300 years ago, Lake Myvatn covers about 14 square miles (37 square kilometers) and has an average depth of only 8.2 feet (2.5 meters).
The area is known for its lava formations, pseudocraters, geothermal activity, and rich wildlife. You see the Skutustadagigar Pseudocraters, with their moon-like look, and can explore them on marked walking paths.
You also visit Dimmuborgir Lava Field, known as the "Dark Castles," a maze of tall lava formations, arches, and spires that look like the ruins of an old fortress.
Your guide also takes you to the Namafjall Mountain area to see the Hverir mud pools, with bubbling mud, steaming fumaroles, and yellow, red, and orange mineral deposits.
You also stop at Grjotagja Cave, which holds a geothermal hot spring that is too hot for bathing, and see the rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
You then continue to Earth Lagoon Myvatn, where you can bathe in the mineral-rich geothermal water at your own expense.
After the Lake Myvatn area, you head to Dettifoss Waterfall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, with an average flow of about 6,800 cubic feet (193 cubic meters) per second. On sunny days, look for rainbows in the mist.
Your last stop is nearby Selfoss Waterfall, about 36 feet (11 meters) high and over 330 feet (100 meters) wide, where a series of smaller cascades forms a curtain of water.
At the end of the tour, your guide takes you back to your accommodation in Akureyri.
