Description

Experience the wonders of an area rich in stunning landscapes before conquering a series of majestic waterfalls on this thrilling Lake Myvatn, Godafoss, Dettifoss, and Selfoss waterfalls tour. This 9.5-hour adventure takes travelers to some of the most captivating sites in North Iceland on board a 4x4 vehicle.

The action begins in the morning when a friendly local guide picks you up from Akureyri on a comfortable 4x4 vehicle. Riding 4x4 vehicles when touring Iceland offers numerous benefits, enhancing the overall travel experience. Your 4x4 vehicle is perfect for accessing Iceland's rugged and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Your first stop for the day is the beautiful Godafoss waterfall. Known as the "Waterfall of the Gods," Godafoss is one of Iceland's most stunning and historically significant waterfalls. Godafoss waterfall measures approximately 100 feet (30 meters) wide and drops about 39 feet (12 meters) into a horseshoe-shaped canyon.

You can walk along the well-maintained paths and viewing platforms on both sides of the river to further appreciate the waterfall's beauty from different angles.

Next, you'll head to the Lake Myvatn area to witness some of Iceland's most fascinating natural wonders. Formed around 2,300 years ago by a lava eruption, Lake Myvatn covers about 14 square miles (37 square kilometers) and has an average depth of only 8.2 feet (2.5 meters).

The area is known for its striking landscapes and rich biodiversity. Many lava formations, pseudocraters, and geothermal activity surround Lake Myvatn. You'll check out the Skutustadagigar pseudocraters and their distinctive, moon-like appearance. You can explore the area via well-marked walking paths that wind through the craters.

You'll also visit the Dimmuborgir lava fields, known for their dramatic and unusual rock formations. Also known as the "Dark Castles," Dimmuborgir is a labyrinth of towering lava structures, arches, and spires resembling the ruins of an old fortress.

The guide will also take you to the Mount Namafjall area to see the Hverir mud pools. The area is rich in geothermal activity with bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and vibrant mineral deposits. As you explore the area, you'll notice steaming fissures and brightly colored mineral deposits in yellow, red, and orange hues.

You'll also stop at the Grjotagja cave, where a beautiful geothermal hot spring resides. Though the pool's temperature doesn't allow for bathing, seeing it up close is something you wouldn't want to miss. In addition, you'll see a rift separating the Eurasian and American continents.

You'll then proceed to the Myvatn Nature Baths for some geothermal bathing. The bath's mineral-rich waters offer rejuvenation for the mind and body.

After enjoying the beauty of the Lake Myvatn area, you'll head to Dettifoss, Iceland's most powerful waterfall. Detifoss boasts an impressive water flow rate averaging 193 cubic meters per second. As you enjoy its cascading waters, look for stunning rainbows beside the mist during sunny days.

To cap off the tour, you'll visit the neighboring Selfoss waterfall. The waterfall stands about 36 feet (11 meters) high and over 330 feet (100 meters) wide, creating a beautiful cascading water curtain. Detifoss waterfall's most outstanding feature is the series of smaller cascades and falls, offering a picturesque viewing experience.

At the end of the tour, the guide will take you back to your Akureyri accommodation.

Don't miss this chance to witness some of Iceland's most memorable waterfalls and other natural wonders on a 4x4 premium tour. Check availability now by choosing a date.
