On this 5-hour ice glacier hike in Iceland, a professional photographer will capture candid moments and breathtaking backdrops as you explore the ice plains. Enjoy the journey without worrying about your phone or camera.
Meet your certified glacier guide at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon parking lot in Vatnajokull National Park. From there, you’ll hop aboard a 4×4 vehicle for a scenic drive across an ancient glacier plain. After turning onto a rugged F-road, the ride becomes bumpy but exciting, marking your first taste of Iceland’s wild, untouched landscapes.
At the glacier base camp, your guide will provide you with all the necessary gear, including crampons, an ice axe, a helmet, a headlamp, and a harness. With safety instructions and equipment in place, you’ll begin a 30-minute hike over flat, rocky terrain toward the edge of Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, an outlet of Vatnajokull.
This approach is rated easy to moderate and is suitable for anyone with average fitness.. You’ll spend about 4 hours on the trail, including time on the glacier itself, with plenty of chances to pause, take photos, and rest along the way.
As soon as your crampons crunch into the ice, the landscape transforms. Led by your guide, you’ll trek across a maze of icy ridges, moulins (deep glacial holes), and glowing blue ice formations.
The tour’s highlight is the descent into a stunning natural ice cave filled with crystal crevasses (deep cracks in glacial ice). The deeper you go, the bluer the world becomes, until you’re surrounded by translucent walls that feel like something from a dream. After about an hour on the glacier, you’ll retrace your steps back to the trailhead and return by 4×4 to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where your guide will bid you farewell.
