Description

Conquer Iceland’s most famous hiking trail on a 6-day Laugavegur hiking tour, combining scenic treks, natural hot spring bathing, and the glow of the midnight sun.

Complete with cozy mountain hut stays, included meals, and trusted guides by your side, this multi-day summer hiking tour is perfect for adventurers looking to explore Landmannalaugar, Thorsmork Valley, Fimmvorduhals Pass, and other iconic highland destinations on foot.

The Highlands of Iceland is considered one of the world’s premier hiking regions, thanks to its dramatic variety and remote wilderness. Here, colorful rhyolite mountains give way to black-sand deserts, geothermal valleys, lush birch woodlands, and sweeping glacial views.

The best way to explore this region is through the world-famous Laugavegur, a trail spanning roughly 34 miles (55 kilometers). Each day’s trek can take between 3 to 9 hours, depending on the group’s pace, so tour participants need to have good physical fitness.

The trail is accessible only during the short summer season, from June to September, when conditions are safest. During this time, river crossings are manageable and long daylight hours allow for extended time on the trail.

For six days, all logistics are taken care of on this fully organized Laugavegur trek, including round-trip transportation between Reykjavik and the trail, professional mountain guides, and a carefully planned itinerary.

With experienced leaders handling navigation, safety, and daily pacing, you can focus entirely on the physical challenge and reward of crossing Iceland’s wild interior.

Accommodation and meals are designed for comfort and recovery after long days on the trail. You’ll stay in handpicked mountain huts with cozy sleeping arrangements and welcoming communal spaces. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and refreshments are also included.

Your Laugavegur hiking tour’s highlights are Thorsmork Nature Reserve and Landmannalaugar trekking. Landmannalaugar is famous for its colorful rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs shaped by centuries of eruptions.

Thorsmork, by contrast, is known for its lush valleys, birch forests, glacial rivers, and dramatic mountain scenery framed by nearby ice caps.

Between Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork, the Laugavegur Trail reveals the dramatic transitions that define Iceland’s highlands. The route crosses Hrafntinnusker’s obsidian desert, Jokultungur’s steaming gullies, and climbs exposed ridges with breathtaking views.

Farther along, vast black-sand plains such as Maelifellssandur are bordered by moss-covered volcanoes like Storasula and Hattafell, with distant ice caps glistening in the background.

Tranquil landscapes balance the challenge. River crossings lead to Alftavatn Lake, where still waters reflect mossy hillsides, while meadows at Botnar provide quiet resting points hidden in an otherwise volcanic world.

To make your multi-day hiking tour in Iceland more exciting, the itinerary extends into the Fimmvorduhals Pass. Here, fresh lava fields and the craters Magni and Modi stand as striking reminders of Iceland’s 2010 eruption, highlighting the raw geological forces that shape Iceland.

Over six days on the trail, the Laugavegur and Fimmvorduhals routes reveal the full contrast of Iceland’s highlands. The combination of adventurous hikes, shared hut stays, and guided support creates an experience that goes beyond sightseeing and into true exploration.

Don’t miss the chance to join this 6-day guided Laugavegur hike with the Fimmvorduhals Pass. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Daily itinerary

Day 1

Day 1 - Landmannalaugar Rhyolite Mountains

Your six-day Laugavegur hike begins in Reykjavik, where you meet your guide and small hiking group. From here, you’ll board a Highland bus for an early morning departure from Reykjavik. The journey takes you to Landmannalaugar, the official starting point of the trail and one of the country’s top hiking areas.

The journey takes about 3–4 hours and covers 121 miles (195 kilometers). Along the way, you’ll pass South Coast farmlands and the looming presence of Mount Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active and historic volcanoes.

Arriving in Landmannalaugar, you’ll enter a geothermal valley of hot springs, lava fields, and colorful rhyolite mountains. Located within the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, this geothermal valley is the official starting point of the Laugavegur Trail.

The valley is often called the “people’s pools” because of its natural hot springs. If conditions allow, you may enjoy a relaxing soak surrounded by colorful mountain peaks and untouched wilderness.

Landmannalaugar’s most striking feature is its rainbow of colors. The slopes shift from deep red to golden yellow and vibrant green, creating a breathtaking spectacle that rivals Peru’s famous Rainbow Mountain.

Instead of jumping straight into a demanding Landmannalaugar hike, you’ll start with a short loop to ease into the trail. The route follows part of the Laugavegur Trail across the Laugahraun Lava Field, where dark volcanic rock contrasts with the bright rhyolite mountains rising across the skyline.

Nearby rises Brennisteinsalda Volcano, often called the “Sulphur Wave.” Its slopes shimmer with green moss, black ash, and red iron streaks. Standing at 2,805 feet (855 meters), it is one of Landmannalaugar’s most striking natural features.

Blahnjukur, the “Blue Peak,” is another highlight of the Laugavegur trek. From its summit, you’ll enjoy sweeping views across colorful mountains, dark lava fields, and distant glaciers, providing a spectacular introduction to the trail ahead.

Over four to five hours of hiking, you’ll cover 4.9 miles (8 kilometers) with a steady ascent of 1,540 feet (470 meters).

After your hike, settle into the Landmannalaugar Mountain Hut for the night. Lunch, refreshments, and dinner are included, giving you time to relax and share stories with your fellow hikers.

Day 2

Day 2 - Landmannalaugar to Alftavatn Lake

The second day of your Laugavegur hike begins with a hearty breakfast. After a restful night, you’ll prepare for one of the trek’s longest and most scenic stages across the Icelandic Highlands.

Today’s trek spans 15 miles (24 kilometers) over 8 to 9 hours, with a steady ascent of 2,952 feet (900 meters). Along the way, you’ll see colorful mountains, geothermal valleys, volcanic deserts, and distant glacier views, making it a rewarding day on the Laugavegur Trail.

The hike begins through the Laugahraun Lava Field, a jagged formation formed by ancient eruptions. Close by, the slopes of Brennisteinsalda Volcano glow with mineral-rich colors that stand out against the lava fields. Although it’s a volcano, its last eruption dates back to the year 1341.

Climbing higher, you’ll reach the rhyolite mountains of Reykjafjoll. This area is alive with geothermal activity, with steam rising from vents across the landscape. Sulfur-stained ridges glow in orange and yellow, contrasting sharply with the cooler highland terrain.

Along the way, you’ll also pass Storihver, one of the largest hot springs in the Highlands. Its powerful steam vents make it a perfect spot to admire Iceland’s raw volcanic energy.

The trail reaches Hrafntinnusker, an obsidian desert scattered with volcanic glass. Snow patches and steaming vents show off Iceland’s volcanic wilderness, making it a great spot for lunch. Its high elevation and isolation give the area a wild, untouched feel.

From here, the trail descends into Jokultungur, a geothermal area filled with steaming valleys and bubbling mud pools. Red and yellow mineral deposits stand out against pale sand-toned peaks, creating a colorful highland scenery.

At the top of Jokultungur, enjoy sweeping views across the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. On clear days, glaciers such as Myrdalsjokull, Eyjafjallajokull, and Tindfjallajokull appear on the horizon, their icy peaks framing the dramatic volcanic landscapes below.

The day’s final challenge is a glacial river crossing. Wading through cold, rushing water is a memorable part of the Laugavegur hike that heightens the reward of reaching the far bank at last.

Beyond the river lies Alftavatn Lake, one of the Laugavegur trek’s most beautiful stops. Its calm waters reflect the surrounding hillsides, offering a peaceful contrast after a long day. The Alftavatn Mountain Hut welcomes you for dinner and a restful evening.

Day 3

Day 3 - Alftavatn to Emstrur Crossing Volcano-Shaped Landscapes

Your third morning on the guided Laugavegur hike begins at Alftavatn Lake. Fuel up with breakfast alongside fellow hikers before setting out for another exciting day in the Highlands.

Today’s route covers about 9.5 miles (15 kilometers) and takes six to seven hours to complete. Although the overall descent is modest, the terrain varies between river crossings, black sand plains, and volcanic ridges.

The day begins with a stream crossing, now a familiar part of the Laugavegur Trail. The cold glacial water rushing against your legs is refreshing and reminds you of the untamed beauty of Iceland’s Highlands.

Trek through Maelifellssandur, a vast black desert shaped by volcanic ash and glacial floods. The green slopes of Storasula and Hattafell contrast with the dark landscape, offering excellent photo opportunities along the trail.

Glaciers appear on the horizon as you continue the hike. Eyjafjallajokull rises first, its ice-covered slopes a reminder of the 2010 eruption that disrupted travel across Europe.

Myrdalsjokull soon dominates the view. Its ever-changing surface makes it one of the most dynamic and visually striking glaciers in Iceland. Beneath the ice rests Katla, one of Iceland’s most powerful volcanoes.

Arrive at Markarfljotsgljufur Canyon, a dramatic 656-foot (200-meter) gorge formed by glacial rivers. Walking along the cliffs, you’ll see winding channels carved deep into the Highlands.

The black desert eventually gives way to Botnar, a green oasis in the Highlands. Meadows, streams, and peaceful surroundings provide a perfect reward after a demanding Laugavegur hike.

Evening is spent in the Emstrur Mountain Hut at Botnar. After a hot meal with your group, rest up for the next day’s adventure.

Day 4

Day 4 - Emstrur to Thorsmork Entering Iceland’s Forested Valley Sanctuary

At the Emstrur hut, day four begins with a warm breakfast and time to prepare for the trail. Today marks the final stretch of the Laugavegur Trail as you head toward the green valleys of Thorsmork.

The route covers 9.5 miles (15 kilometers) and takes around six to seven hours. It descends nearly 1,000 feet (300 meters), leading you through canyons, ridges, and open valleys that reveal the changing landscapes.

Early in the hike, you enter the Almenningar Gorge, one of the most dramatic sections of the Laugavegur Trail. Towering cliffs rise steeply on both sides, and the narrow passage feels both remote and awe-inspiring.

Farther ahead, Mount Einhyrningur, or Unicorn Mountain, comes into view. Its sharp, horn-like ridge stands out against the sky, a natural landmark that points the way toward the distant glaciers.

As the Laugavegur hike continues, glaciers dominate the horizon. Myrdalsjokull Glacier glistens under the sunlight, its icy surface shaped by volcanic heat and harsh weather conditions. Beside it, Eyjafjallajokull Volcano rises bright and white, creating a stunning panorama of snowy peaks.

The terrain gradually softens as you approach Thorsmork. The dark sands give way to soft green hills, and the air feels fresher. Low shrubs turn into birch forests, while birdsong and rustling leaves replace the silence of the Highland desert.

Arriving in Thorsmork feels like entering a hidden paradise. This lush valley offers winding trails, moss-covered ground, and calm forests. It’s a peaceful end to a demanding Laugavegur hike in Iceland.

Evening brings rest at the Langidalur Mountain Hut, where you share dinner and stories with your group. Outside, Thorsmork’s peaks glow softly in the fading light, a perfect finish before your next adventure.

Day 5

Day 5 - Fimmvorduhals Trail and the Magni & Modi Craters

Day 5 marks the beginning of the Fimmvorduhals trek. Begin with breakfast in the hut, sharing a meal with fellow hikers to fuel up for a challenging day ahead.

This section of the trek covers about 10 miles (16 kilometers) and takes seven to eight hours to complete. It’s a demanding hike with steep climbs and rugged terrain, but the rewards are beyond anything you’ve seen so far.

You’ll leave the hut behind and step onto the trail, surrounded by Thorsmork’s green birch forests. Soon the trees thin, giving way to slopes of sand and ash. The climb begins, and the air grows cooler as you ascend.

The full Thorsmork Valley opens below, with braided rivers twisting through mossy ground. The trail then leads you to the Magni and Modi Craters, named after the sons of Thor in Norse mythology. Born from the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption, these are two of the youngest craters in Iceland.

Between the craters, the trail climbs sharp ridges and loose gravel slopes, revealing views of Iceland’s southern Highlands. Around you, the panorama stretches to distant glaciers, where bright ice contrasts with the dark volcanic ground.

Myrdalsjokull Glacier dominates the eastern skyline, while Eyjafjallajokull Volcano rises to the west. Hiking between these glacier giants on freshly formed volcanic land is one of the Fimmvorduhals trek’s most unforgettable highlights.

As you begin the descent back to Thorsmork, the barren volcanic landscape gradually softens. Mosses reappear, shrubs multiply, and the valley once again welcomes you with its lush greenery.

The day ends back at the Langidalur Mountain Hut, where you’ll enjoy a well-earned dinner with your group. After a long day on the Fimmvorduhals Trail, settling into the warm, comfortable hut is the perfect way to rest and recharge.

Day 6

Day 6 - Thorsmork to Reykjavik

The final day of your hiking tour in Iceland begins in Thorsmork. After breakfast in the hut, you’ll have time to enjoy this remarkable area before returning to Reykjavik.

For a final challenge, you can hike to Mount Utigonguhofdi. The 3.5-mile (6-kilometer) route with an ascent of 902 feet (275 meters) takes about three hours to complete. The trail climbs to a summit overlooking Thorsmork’s winding birch forests and the massive ice caps of Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull.

If you prefer a gentler option, a walk to Husadalur leads through woodland paths and quiet streams. This easy option allows you to savor the valley’s beauty and remain close to the heart of Thorsmork.

You can also choose to stay near Langidalur and relax in the peaceful setting. Birch trees and mountain peaks surround the hut, offering a calm atmosphere after several demanding days of Laugavegur and Fimmvorduhals hikes.

By midday, it's time to say farewell to Thorsmork. The Highland bus navigates the rugged tracks to the South Coast. Along the way, volcanic plains and distant glaciers provide a final glimpse of the landscapes that defined the trek.

Before reaching Reykjavik, the bus stops at Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most photographed waterfalls. A short path leads behind the waterfall, offering a rare chance to stand directly behind the curtain of falling water.

Arrival in Reykjavik is around 6:30 PM, depending on weather and road conditions. The city’s colorful houses and coastal setting feel far removed from the Highlands, but the memories of rivers, valleys, glaciers, and volcanic craters remain unforgettable.

Completing the Laugavegur Trail and the Fimmvorduhals Pass is a true accomplishment. In six days, you’ve crossed ridges, forests, and fresh lava, making this one of the most iconic multi-day hiking tours in Iceland.

Good to know

During the Laugavegur tour, you’ll stay in a different mountain hut each night as the trek progresses, with the exception of the last two nights in Thorsmork.

The huts are shared and offer dormitory-style rooms with single and twin bunk beds. Facilities such as bathrooms and dining areas are communal, and sleeping bags are required.

There is no Wi-Fi in the huts, though you may find occasional 3G/4G reception along the trail. Connection is unreliable, so it’s best to prepare for being offline during the trek.

Meals are included from lunch on day one through lunch on day six, and all hikers, including the guide, help with preparation. The standard menu features dairy, meat, fish, bread, and nuts. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-friendly meals are available for an additional supplement arranged at booking.

Each traveler can bring one piece of luggage weighing up to 44 lbs (20 kg), which will be transferred between huts, and a small daypack for daily essentials. Extra baggage can be stored in Reykjavik for a small fee. Sleeping bags can also be rented in advance if needed.

The minimum age for this trek is 15, and the difficulty level is considered moderate. Daily hikes can last 6–9 hours across uneven terrain, so a good level of fitness is required.
