Whale watch from the ‘capital of the North’, Akureyri, and witness the unbelievable wealth of marine life in Eyjafjörður (Island fjord). No one who loves nature and wildlife, planning to travel to Iceland’s North, should give this tour a miss!

The excursion departs from Akureyri’s floating pier, which you can arrange a drop-off to, but walking is relatively easy due to closeness to town. Here, you will board your high-speed vessel, a sleek ship with a large indoor area, outdoor viewing platforms, a bar and a room of overalls you can borrow to keep warm in.

As soon as the departure time arrives, you will set off into the fjord in search for wildlife. Watching the beautiful town of Akureyri shrink behind you, and the amazing mountains of Tröllaskagi (Troll peninsula) loom over you, is a lovely way to start the tour. You will continue sailing until you reach the feeding grounds of the whales.

Humpback whales are the most common species sighted in the North of Iceland, especially during the summer months although they are also seen in winter. These gregarious acrobats are well-known surface performers, entertaining guests by breaching, fluke diving and feeding.

You also have the chance to see white-beaked dolphins in abundance throughout the year, as well as harbour porpoises and even seals. Other species previously reported in the fjord are the Blue whale, Orcas and Fin whales, although they are not a permanent resident in the area and quite a rare sighting on our tours.

If taking the tour in summer, you may get so lucky to see Puffins that reside in Iceland to breed during the summertime as well as countless other seabirds. While this species in particular is gone come winter, many others remain. The surroundings are as beautiful in either season, although the landscapes when covered in snow are particularly mesmerising.

For three hours, you will sail into the longest glacial fjord in all of Iceland on our comfortable and specially modified catamaran, hopefully catching sighting after sighting. It would be very unusual not to see a single whale, dolphin or porpoise on your trip, as our sighting success over the past couple of summers is 100%, but if that is indeed the case, you will be able to join another tour free of charge.

And of course, if the tour is cancelled due to weather, you’ll be able to get on the next trip that fits into your schedule.

See the whales of North Iceland during an unforgettable experience. Check availability by choosing a date.

Everything was really nice. Staff is friendly, weather was perfect, and the main important: we could see lots of whales. They came close to the boat. Really recommend to everybody!

This trip was fantastic! In our Iceland trip, we went on 2 whale watching tours. One in Husavik on a smaller boat, and this tour from Akureyri. While they were both wonderful, this tour from Akureyri and the Elding company was just fantastic! Even though the boat was big, the captain and guide were both fantastic. We got very close to quite a few whales, and I never felt like we were going to run them over! The guide said, "the whales are popping up like popcorn today!" And we saw at least 5 different whales. It was just spectacular!! The boat was also wonderful, the jumpsuits were all functional and comfortable. I would recommend this tour to EVERYONE!! DO NOT MISS IT!

Everything was as expected! Rental car process was easy and the car was reliable/great (and SO convenient to have GPS and portable WiFi - will never go without in the future!). Tours were excellent - of course, on a tour like Whale Watching you're just not guaranteed to see whales, but we still enjoyed the boat ride and beautiful scenery. On any trip it's important to be flexible! :) We did most of the optional excursions, and the guides and staff prepared you for each adventure appropriately (gear/coveralls when needed). We felt safe, and enjoyed our guides (friendly, knowledgable, professional). Do make sure to plan enough drive time to arrive at your tours when you're supposed to (there will be other people on some of these tours). One thing I did not expect was to have to share a snowmobile... I was under the impression I was booking one for me and one for my friend, and was disappointed we had to ride the same vehicle (this was awkward as my friend is very much on the "heavy side"). Accommodations were as expected. Some of the places that have dinner options do require you to make a reservation, which would have been nice to know ahead of time, so we didn't have to travel back out to nearby towns to find other available restaurants. However, we were never disappointed with the food! Staff in the hotels and restaurants were always kind and helpful. The itinerary that Guide to Iceland put together for us was fantastic. The suggestions of places to see were very helpful (I read on previous comments that you would not be able to fit all of them in, and I agree that it's wise to map out ahead of time everything that you want to do). I would definitely, highly recommend this trip and Guide to Iceland! Accommodation

I decided to travel solo, and was super torn between renting my own car or going rugged and doing the caravan to camp. After much deliberation, I decided to book a guided tour for 11 days. I AM SO HAPPY I did this! I can’t put into words how unbelievably amazing this trip was. The others I met on the tour were so incredibly and were from all over the world. We all really bonded, and are going to keep in touch. But the highlight of our tour was our guide Helga. She’s the kindest, coolest, funniest, so calm, unique and and all around amazing person. I can’t imagine my trip without her. Helga, thank you for all the sharing of elves, your cultures, language, stories and so much more. I am so thankful for Guide to Iceland! I can’t wait to tell everyone about it! Few pointers - please wear waterproof clothing and layers! This is so important! We were very lucky for the first leg of our journey to get the sun (warmest summer in a iceland), but Iceland did not disappoint and deliver some epic rain and wind. Packing waterproof shoes, pants, coat and layers made the rain and wind totally bearable. Overall, I would 100% do this trip again, and plan on returning to discover the west fjords! If you’re hesitant, don’t be! Everything is well taking care of, and the team is super helpful with answering your questions. Just do it!

The guides JK & Elizabeth are nice, professional and helpful. The sceneries in Iceland are excellent, weather was mostly fine during the trip with only one to two days of shower. We would definitely visit this website first when planning our next trip.

One of the best days of the holiday! The whales were further up the coast so we took a bus to Dalvik and sailed from there. There were so many Hump backed whales and dolphins and our Biologist tour guide was so informative and genuinely excited it made for an amazing few hours. A huge thank you to all the team!!

My husband and I went whale watching as part of our honeymoon. It was the most amazing experience! The fjord was gorgeous and we saw both humpback and minke whales. Don't forget to warm up with some Whale Punch at then end!

This was a fantastic whale watching trip! Myself and my partner travelled up to Akureyri as they had the promise that if you did not see a whale they would book you in another trip for free and the success rate for seeing a whale is so high. The crew were friendly and the marine biologist guiding the tour was very enthusiastic and made it all the more exciting. We saw a humpback whale who had not been named yet (my boyfriend wanted to suggest Whaley McWhale Face but I wasn’t quite sure about that one) feeding around the harbour not even 10 minutes after the tour started. It even swam under the boat at one point! Magical experience that meant the world to us. Definitely suggest warm clothing with some base layers and sturdy footwear with cosy warm socks. They provide overalls as well if you are getting too cold or just want to make it that bit special! All in all this is a wonderful and well organised tour which was easy to book and handled well throughout. You would not regret booking with this company!
