Whale Watching Tour with Transfer from Akureyri

Whale watch from the ‘capital of the North’, Akureyri, and witness the unbelievable wealth of marine life in Eyjafjörður (Island fjord). No one who loves nature and wildlife, planning to travel to Iceland’s North, should give this tour a miss!

The excursion departs from Akureyri’s floating pier, which you can arrange a drop-off to, but walking is relatively easy due to closeness to town. Here, you will board your high-speed vessel, a sleek ship with a large indoor area, outdoor viewing platforms, a bar and a room of overalls you can borrow to keep warm in.

As soon as the departure time arrives, you will set off into the fjord in search for wildlife. Watching the beautiful town of Akureyri shrink behind you, and the amazing mountains of Tröllaskagi (Troll peninsula) loom over you, is a lovely way to start the tour. You will continue sailing until you reach the feeding grounds of the whales.

Humpback whales are the most common species sighted in the North of Iceland, especially during the summer months although they are also seen in winter. These gregarious acrobats are well-known surface performers, entertaining guests by breaching, fluke diving and feeding.

You also have the chance to see white-beaked dolphins in abundance throughout the year, as well as harbour porpoises and even seals. Other species previously reported in the fjord are the Blue whale, Orcas and Fin whales, although they are not a permanent resident in the area and quite a rare sighting on our tours.

If taking the tour in summer, you may get so lucky to see Puffins that reside in Iceland to breed during the summertime as well as countless other seabirds. While this species in particular is gone come winter, many others remain. The surroundings are as beautiful in either season, although the landscapes when covered in snow are particularly mesmerising.

For three hours, you will sail into the longest glacial fjord in all of Iceland on our comfortable and specially modified catamaran, hopefully catching sighting after sighting. It would be very unusual not to see a single whale, dolphin or porpoise on your trip, as our sighting success over the past couple of summers is 100%, but if that is indeed the case, you will be able to join another tour free of charge.
