Description
Ride a super jeep across glacial rivers into Thorsmork Valley, a nature reserve in the southern Highlands, on this private tour from Reykjavik with an optional hike.
You travel with an English-speaking guide, and Wi-Fi is available on board.
Thorsmork Valley, the "Valley of Thor," lies between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajokull, Myrdalsjokull, and Tindfjallajokull. It has ice-capped peaks, jagged mountain ridges, and valleys with moss and birch woodland.
The road to Thorsmork has many unbridged river crossings with deep, fast-flowing water, which often trap unmodified rental cars. Your super jeep is a modified vehicle with huge tires that can cross rivers and handle almost any terrain, so the ride itself is part of the adventure.
On the way, you stop at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland, where you can walk behind the falling water.
Next, you see Gigjokull Glacier, an outlet glacier flowing from Eyjafjallajokull. A glacial lagoon once lay beneath it, but it was destroyed by a flood during the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, and today you can drive on the former lagoon bed almost up to the glacier.
In Thorsmork, you visit Basar, a sheltered area of natural birch woods with hiking trails in all directions through valleys and gorges. You also see Alfakirkja, the "Elves' Church."
You can join an optional easy to moderate hike of about 90 minutes up Valahnukur Mountain, an ascent of about 722 feet (220 meters). From the top, you can see valleys and gorges covered with moss and birch forest, glacial rivers, and Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull Glaciers.
Thorsmork has more beautiful places than you can visit in one day, so ask your guide to show you their favorite spot. You then return to Reykjavik by super jeep.
