Witness the spectacular Westfjords from the sea, with this kayaking tour from Ísafjörður. This excursion should not be missed by travellers to this remote region who want to combine incredible nature with thrilling adventure.
This tour begins in the capital of the Westfjords, Ísafjörður, by the Maritime Museum. Here, you will meet your guides, who will introduce your group to your kayaks and equipment. You will get a practice paddle just off the shore until you are comfortable, before setting out into the incredible fjord.
The Westfjords boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes of Iceland. The giant mountains here are the oldest in the county, dating back sixteen million years, and home hundreds of trickling waterfalls. The seascapes, meanwhile, are glorious; unless the conditions are particularly adverse, the surface of the ocean should be flat, gleaming and a pleasure to kayak across.
The wildlife of this region is also amongst the best in the country. You are likely to see many seabirds as your travel and have a great chance of seeing seals.
If you are particularly lucky, you might even spot a whale or dolphin, with the most common species being humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoise. There are over twenty species that occasionally visit the fjord, however, including blue whales and orcas.
You will spend approximately two hours on the water, going at a pace that matches your group. Everyone who is comfortable with a paddle and doesn’t mind getting a bit damp is welcome to join the tour so long as they are twelve years old or older.
Finally, you will return to Ísafjörður, and have the rest of the day to explore this cultural centre, or else head out further into the Westfjords.
