Explore the Westfjords by super jeep with this exciting day tour. Those seeking amazing landscapes and natural features should not overlook this fantastic excursion.
The tour begins when you are picked up in Patreksfjörður by your guide who will then take you on the first part of this journey, along a route called the ‘Kjaran’s Avenue’. This route was carved by one man using his bulldozer and is a treacherous and thrilling path to take. Just one vehicle wide, the road has mountains pressing against one side, and a sheer cliff to the ocean on the other.
You will stop on the stony beach of Skútabjörg, to regain your breath and take photos of the beautiful views. Following this, conditions allowing, you will ascend the largest mountain in the Westfjords, Kaldbakur, for even more impressive panoramas. If this is not possible, you will instead take the winding, withered road through the beautiful Hrafnseyrarheiði area.
Your main destination today, however, is the Crown Jewel of the Westfjords, and perhaps of Iceland altogether. Dynjandi waterfall is a feature that falls from a staircase-like cliff-face which stands over one-hundred metres tall. The water widens as it descends, making it a strange, trapezium shape that only seems to add to its scale.
Iceland is full of examples of nature that appear to have been lifted straight from fantasy, and Dynjandi is no doubt near the top of this list.
A hiking path takes you to many smaller waterfalls as you get closer and closer to this feature, and while all are beautiful, in the shadow of Dynjandi, they look a little quaint.
After making the most of one of the country’s greatest landmarks, you’ll return to your super jeep and be whisked back to Patreksfjörður.
