Description
Summary
Description
Immerse yourself in the wild Icelandic nature on this hiking tour of the rhyolitic mountains of Kerlingarfjöll in the highlands. Hike through the otherworldly landscapes, through geothermal valleys and up kaleidoscopic hills, and take a dip in a natural, warm hot spring.
Those travelling to the northern town of Akureyri and want to spice up their holiday should not let this opportunity pass them by.
On the morning of your tour, you’ll meet your guide in Akureyri and board a large 4x4 jeep. You will then be driven out of town and into the barren Icelandic highlands where a day of adventures and stunning natural beauty awaits you.
You’ll drive the rough road Kjölur that leads from Akureyri into the highlands. The 600-700 metre high mountain pass will take you past rivers, lakes and mountains, providing a bare and desolate scenery, reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic movie.
Your destinations, Hveravellir and Kerlingarfjöll, are located between the glaciers Langjökull in the west and Hofsjökull in the east. The geothermal area of Hveravellir is like an oasis situated between barren sands and mountains. It is dotted with colourful sinters, smoking fumaroles and a hot pool with warm sky-blue water.
You’ll get a chance to bathe in the warm, geothermal waters of the pool in Hveravellir. Both hot and cold water flow in the pool, creating the perfect bathing temperature. The experience is only heightened by the beautiful views of Kjalhraun lava field and Langjökull glacier.
On this tour, you will also get to visit the hidden gem of Kerlingarfjöll geothermal area, located in the centre of the highlands. You’ll hike through the untouched wilderness of the region, past hot springs and still pools, while colourful mountains of rhyolite rocks tower over you.
