Description
Hike on Falljokull Glacier, an outlet glacier of Vatnajokull Glacier, on this easy summer tour from Freysnes near Skaftafell. It's a good introduction to glacier hiking, and no previous experience is needed.
The tour starts at Freysnes Service Station, 2 minutes from Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park, where you meet your local glacier guide and the rest of the group.
From there, a modified 4x4 vehicle drives you to the glacier, which saves your energy and gives you more time on the ice. Vatnajokull Glacier is the largest glacier in Europe by volume.
At the edge of the glacier, you put on your crampons, take an ice axe, and head onto the ice for about an hour. You explore ice features such as moulins, crevasses, moraines, and dirt cones.
Along the way, your guide tells you about the Oraefi region, home to Hvannadalshnukur, the highest peak in Iceland, and several volcanoes. In summer, you also have views of the high mountain peaks and of black sand beaches stretching toward the ocean.
Afterward, you ride back to Freysnes, where the tour ends.
