See the highlights of Iceland's landscapes from the air on this half-day helicopter tour from Reykjavik. It suits travelers who want to fit as much sightseeing as possible into one day.
You take off from Reykjavik Domestic Airport with an experienced pilot and guide.
First, you fly over Reykjavik, where landmarks and brightly colored houses shrink beneath you as you climb.
From the city, you set out along the Golden Circle. You fly over Thingvellir National Park, the founding site of Iceland's parliament, one of the oldest parliaments in the world. From above, you clearly see the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Next, you fly over the Geysir Geothermal Area, with its steaming vents and the power plants that use geothermal energy. Strokkur Geyser erupts every 4 to 16 minutes and usually shoots water 49 to 66 feet (15 to 20 meters) into the air. You also see Gullfoss Waterfall from the sky.
The tour then continues to the Highlands. You fly over the colorful mountains of Landmannalaugar, Haifoss Waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland, the glacier-capped Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, and Thorsmork Valley.
Your pilot makes two landings of 15 to 20 minutes each at scenic spots, and your group enjoys a picnic.
After 3 to 3.5 hours in total, you make your way back to Reykjavik Domestic Airport with a camera full of aerial photographs.
