The evening tour takes approximately 1 hour and is ideal to combine with other evening activities such as Northern lights hunting (in winter), midnight sun tour (summer) or dinner along the south coast.

Over five thousand years ago, a massive volcanic eruption from the Leiti crater close to Reykjavik forced tons of molten lava flowing towards the ocean. The lava flowed both on the surface and underground through lava tubes. One of those Lava tubes is Raufarhólshellir. At over 1.300 meters Raufarhólshellir is one of the longest lava tubes in Iceland. Exploring the cave is an experience you will never forget. You will get get the opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption, as you follow the flow path of the lava as it forced its way through the earth all those centuries ago.  On this evening tour, an experienced guide takes you approximately 350 meters into the lava tunnel on a path made out of lava rocks and metal platforms that provide easy access through the tube.  A sophisticated, and award winning, lighting in the cave allows you to explore its magnificent geological formations and amazing colors just as easily either night or day making you likely to forget both time and place as you enter this geological wonder.

The Lava Tunnel is located at one of the best Northern lights sightseeing spot around Reykjavik and is therefore an ideal combination with your evening program outside Reykjavik in winter.  Spotting the Northern lights can never be guaranteed, but our caving adventure is guaranteed fun! Upon returning to the surface you can warm up with a warm drink in our service building while waiting to see if the lights make an appearance. You have already seen the colors underground, and if you are lucky you might end up seeing even more colors in the sky.

In the summer, this evening tour is ideal for those that want to take advantage of the bright summer evenings and head into an adventure after a dinner in Reykjavik or along the south coast. Whether you are going for a midnight sun hike to the nearby hot river or taking advantage of the incredible evening light to experience the beauty of the south coast, The Lava Tunnel is the perfect stop along the way.
