Take a real adventure on your stay in Iceland with this incredible glacier hike. This tour is perfect for those who want to see what it is like to walk on a stunning Icelandic glacier. This 3-hour family-friendly glacier hike will take you through the beautiful ice formations of Falljökull, an outlet of Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull.
Your day will begin at the Skaftafell Terminal Tour Centre. Here, you will meet your guide and be briefed on safety and what to expect. You will also be fitted with your climbing gear; a harness, crampons and an ice axe. After that, you will be picked up in a modified 4x4 Land Rover Defender truck which will take you towards the glacier.
You will drive through the breathtaking landscapes that have served as the filming locations for many blockbusters such as ‘Batman Begins,’ ‘Interstellar,’ and the incredibly popular HBO series ‘Game of Thrones.’
To get all the way to the glacier, you will travel over the glacier moraine through the rocky terrain that was shaped by the glacier. Once you are there you will be instructed by your licenced guide on the correct way to wear and use your gear, as well as a full safety briefing.
Then you will be ready to start exploring. You will hike through crevasses, peak into moulins and see other features and formations on the glacier. You will always have a view on a massive wall of ice that is a result of a glacier flowing over the edge of a mountain into a steep drop. During the hike, your guide will explain how glaciers are formed and behave, as well as other interesting facts about the area.
On this tour you will usually spend minimum 1,5 up to 2 hours on the ice itself, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful views and take enough photos to bring this experience back home with you.
