Goðafoss is known as "The Waterfall of the Gods" given its place in history; upon adopting Christianity in 1000 AD, the early Icelandic settlers chose to dispose of their pagan idols in frothing waters of Goðafoss, abandoning their former beliefs through this symbolic action.

From there, you will continue on to Lake Mývatn and its gorgeous, volcanic surrounding landscape. Rich in bird life and interesting flora, you will first make a stop at the cragged Dimmuborgir ("Dark Fort"), an area of dried magma that, over the centuries, has come to resemble an ominous castle. You will also visit the geothermally active field of Hverir as well as the dazzling blue interior of Grjótagjá lava cave. 

Once your time at Lake Mývatn has come to fruition, you will begin to make your way to Europe's most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss, a thick curtain of hurling, cascading, frothing water that seems to stand in stark contrast to the hard, grey landscapes that surround it. Dettifoss is 100 meters wide and drops 45 meters down into the gorge, Jökulsárgljúfur. You will take a closer look at Jökulsárgljúfur, the largest gorge in all of Iceland, before heading back to Akureyri.
