Look for Arctic foxes on this small-group wildlife tour of Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the Westfjords.
Your day begins at the harbor in Isafjordur Town, where you meet your guide and board a passenger ferry to Hesteyri, an abandoned village in the reserve. Hornstrandir can only be reached by boat.
The boat ride takes just over an hour and passes through fjords and along the mountain cliffs of the Westfjords.
In Hesteyri, you spend the day hiking in pristine nature, watching for wildlife, and searching for Arctic foxes. Your guide tells you about the history of Hesteyri and its former inhabitants, and about the plants and animals you may see, including harbor seals and many bird species.
Hornstrandir has had no permanent residents since the 1950s because of its remote location and harsh winters. This has allowed Arctic foxes and other wildlife to thrive without disturbance.
The itinerary is flexible. You can focus on photographing foxes, join your guide on a hike along the fjord, or relax outside the historic Doctor's House.
Arctic foxes are wild animals, and many factors affect where they go, including the season and the weather. Fox cubs stay in their dens until mid-June at the earliest.
In the afternoon, you visit the Doctor's House for traditional fish soup with bread, followed by Icelandic pancakes.
Afterward, the boat takes you back to Isafjordur at about 7:00 p.m., and no later than 8:00 p.m.
