Enter a breathtaking Mordor-like world in Iceland by booking this excursion to the active Litli-Hrutur volcano and Reykjanes GeoPark. If you want to witness the incredible display of the earth's power in the land of ice and fire, this is the tour for you.
This adventure starts in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, where you'll greet your experienced guide and join your group on the bus.
Once everyone is gathered, you'll depart the city and begin your drive towards the site where the Litli-Hrutur volcano is currently erupting.
As you travel, be sure to look out the windows at the jagged lava fields, dramatic mountains, and beautiful seascapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, and listen as your guide tells you local tales and how the eruption began.
They can also answer your questions about other landmarks in the area and the folklore of the Reykjanes Peninsula. After all, this region has many colorful tales of trolls, elves, and ghosts.
You will make several stops at interesting points in the Reykjanes GeoPark based on the conditions.
The Litli-Hrutur eruption is the third eruption in three years on the Reykjanes peninsula. Before that, there had not been an eruption on the peninsula for over 800 years. It seems something has been unleashed on this peninsula that laid dormant for centuries, and we're here to see it happen!
Before the eruption took place on July 10, there were also many earthquakes that shook Reykjanes and could even be felt in Reykjavik for several weeks, warning residents that such an event was coming. Though they caused quite a scare, the buildings of Iceland are built to withstand strong tremors.
Once you get near your breathtaking destination, you'll depart the bus and begin the 6 miles (10 kilometers) hike required to reach it. Though your pace will be comfortable, this does go over some rough terrain, so bring good hiking boots and a bottle of water!
Finally, Litli-Hrutur will unfold before you in all its glory. You'll be amazed as you explore the edge of the flowing lava field, witness its massive craters, the gushing lava, and take some spectacular photos and videos. Your guide will have already briefed you on how to stay safe.
You'll have 1.5 hours to absorb the area's majesty before returning to the bus and being driven back to Reykjavik. As you travel, marvel over the images and footage you have taken, and bask in the unforgettable memories you have just created.
