Join this easy and accessible glacier hike on the epic Sólheimajökull glacier, found in South Iceland, and see for yourself the giant crevasses, unique formations and deep sinkholes. This is the perfect tour opportunity for both visitors looking for an introduction to Iceland’s glacier and glacier hiking and for those looking to maximise their valuable time in the country’s picturesque south.

Your tour begins at the Sólheimajökull Parking Lot where you will meet your guide and group, and be fitted with crampons, helmet and a harness. You will then proceed to walk toward the glacier snout, a relaxed 15-minute hike along the serene glacier lagoon that surrounds the glacier valley. When you reach the ice, you will gear up for the glacier hike and your expert guide will demonstrate to you how to safely travel on the ice cap.

Then you will start to make your way around the onto the ice. Your guide will safely navigate the ice and lead you through a maze of crevasses and ice features. You’ll find your guides constantly chopping steps and routes into the ice (in order to provide easy access up the icecap), so no tours are ever exactly the same due to the constantly changing nature of glaciers.

Different seasons offer a different experience on Iceland’s glaciers, making them a fantastic attraction to revisit on return trips. In the summer, you will get the chance to taste the fresh glacier meltwater, while winter allows you to see into the blue, frozen heart of the glacier, as well as traverse numerous ice tunnels.

During the hike, your guide will also share his knowledge of the Icelandic glaciers and their important role in the country’s culture and geological history. All glacier guides in Iceland are passionate about their environment and have gone through a rigorous training program in order to ensure safety on the ice cap.

This is a tour suited for the whole family and no prior glacier experience is needed. So why the holdup? Hurry now and secure your spot on this marvellous tour hiking the mighty Sólheimajökull glacier. Check availability by choosing a date.

This was a fantastic tour! Our guide Bea was absolutely incredible. Only my friend and I were on the tour, so she took us to multiple locations on the glacier and answered all of our questions. The hike was easy and enjoyable, I learned a lot, and had a great time.

Our guide was fantastic! Informative, interactive, and very knowledgeable. You could tell he was extremely passionate about what we were doing, and that translated into how he interacted with the group. Our group was a total of 10 people, which felt like the perfect amount of people to have on a guided tour. I felt like we were appropriately trained on how to utilize our hiking equipment, and I never once felt unsafe on the glacier. Our guide took great care to instruct us on how to safely navigate, and he was constantly aware of where every group member was, and he ensured we were all safe the entire time. We hiked about 2 miles total, including the hike to and from the glacier, and the actual time on the glacier. The tour, including the time inside to debrief on safety instructions, was 2 1/2 hours. The view from the glacier was incredible. Overall, the experience was better than I could have dreamed. Make sure to wear waterproof gear (you can rent pants, coat, and hiking boots for a decent price), because in typical Iceland fashion, we started the hike in sunshine, and about halfway through, ended up getting rained on pretty hard. But if you’re prepared for it, it’s no big deal. I would definitely recommend this guided glacier hike to anyone! And I would gladly do it again!

Great experience! All went very well. Our guide, Tinna from Icelandic Moutain Guides, was very informative and friendly. We were very lucky to have a fine weather without rain and wind. I am over fifty and have slight "vulnerable knees", I don't do active sports but taking regular balancing, joints exercises, and I am generally fit. I found the trip just right. Our son is twelve, he loves geology, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. The glacier is getting smaller every year, see it while it is still available. PS: I made all our holiday bookings and I found Guide to Iceland responsive and well organised.

I would recommend this trip to anyone! This is definitely an easy difficulty hike. We had no previous experience and it was a perfect level for us. We took many breaks and went at a nice slow pace compared to other groups on the glacier. Our guide was very knowledgeable and I learned lots about glaciers and Iceland. Unfortunately it was a rainy day, so renting rain pants from them was a great idea. I never felt nervous or unsafe while on the glacier as our tour guide clearly knew the route and the glacier well.
