The tour begins at the office in Patreksfjordur Town, where you meet your guide and set off for your first stop. The route takes you past seascapes and mountains, and you can ask your guide about the region, its history, and its folklore.
The first stop is Latrabjarg Cliffs, known for birdwatching. The cliffs are 9 miles (14 kilometers) long and up to 1,444 feet (440 meters) high and are home to huge numbers of seabirds.
Over a dozen bird species nest here, and the best known are the resident puffins. They can be found all over the cliffs, and as they haven't been hunted here for decades, they have very little fear of visitors.
You can get within arm's reach of them, but you are asked not to, as the cliff edge is fragile, and the puffins nest in burrows that you could collapse.
Latrabjarg is also the westernmost point of Iceland and is considered by some to be the westernmost point of Europe. It was the site of a dramatic shipwreck and rescue, which you learn more about later on the tour.
Next, you head to Raudasandur Beach nearby. Unlike the black sand beaches of the South Coast, its sands are golden and pink, and you can take a relaxing walk along the shore.
Finally, you visit the Hnjotur Heritage Museum, where admission is included. Here, you learn about the past thousand years of history in the Westfjords, including the shipwreck at Latrabjarg and how Icelanders rescued the sailors trapped at the bottom of the cliff.
