Visit the abandoned village of Hesteyri in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve on this easy, family-friendly tour from Isafjordur, with a boat ride, a guided walk, and traditional Icelandic refreshments.
The tour starts at the harbor in Isafjordur, where you meet your guide and the other guests and board the boat to Hesteyri. The village can only be reached by boat, and the ride takes up to 70 minutes. If you're lucky, you may see seals, Arctic foxes, or even a whale along the way.
Hesteyri lies in Jokulfirdir, one of the Glacier Fjords, surrounded by peaceful scenery. In the late 1940s, the villagers decided together to move away, and by 1952 the village was completely abandoned.
When you arrive, your guide takes you on a walk around the village and tells you about its history and what life was like in such a remote place. The walk is also a good way to enjoy the nature of the Hornstrandir area, which is popular with hikers.
The walk ends at the old doctor's house, now a cafe, where you're served coffee and cakes.
Then you head back to the boat for the ride back to Isafjordur.
