Explore the Icelandic Highlands on this private 4x4 tour from Reykjavik, which takes you deep into one of the most remote regions of the country.
Your local driver-guide picks you up at your accommodation in Reykjavik and drives you toward the Highlands in a 4x4 vehicle, which handles rough terrain and keeps you comfortable on the way.
Your first stop is Haifoss Waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland at 400 feet (122 meters). It lies at the inner end of Thjorsardalur Valley and plunges into a deep canyon.
Around the waterfall, you see wide-open plains, volcanic mountains, and green vegetation.
Next, you head to Gjain Valley, a quiet valley with waterfalls, clear streams, and green vegetation, dotted with small caves and surrounded by cliffs.
After a few hours of exploring, you stop for lunch at your own expense at the Highland Center, which serves soups, sandwiches, burgers, and vegetarian options from the grill.
You then continue to Sigoldugljufur Canyon, often called the "Valley of Tears."
As you approach the canyon, you see the contrast between the barren highland terrain and the green canyon, with many waterfalls feeding its blue streams.
Your next stop is Ljotipollur Crater, whose name means "Ugly Puddle," though the crater is far from ugly. Its deep blue crater lake is set among red and green volcanic slopes and black rock.
As you hike around the edge of the crater, you see barren hills, lava fields, and colorful rhyolite mountains.
Your final stop is Landmannalaugar, known for its rhyolite mountains and geothermal activity. As you hike, you see hillsides in shades of red, green, yellow, and blue, along with hot springs, lava fields, and volcanic craters.
The tour ends with 1 to 2 hours of hiking in Landmannalaugar.
You then return to Reykjavik in your 4x4 vehicle.
