Join this exciting horse riding into the wild lands of East Iceland and experience nature at its best. This is the perfect tour opportunity for those guests looking to experience the Icelandic countrysides by one of the most authentic means possible, on the saddle, as well as all those looking to meet this country's most famous four-legged resident.

Your tour will begin in east Iceland, at a peaceful hideaway, located right by the edge of the Highlands. This is the center point for tours in the region, as well as an active farm, home to sheep, dogs, and chickens. Here, you will be introduced to your friendly and experienced guide who will proceed to take you through the horse riding process step by step.

Fear not if you've never ridden before—all of the guides are passionate and qualified, and Icelandic horses have a reputation for their reliability and docile nature. Horses are chosen out specifically for each rider, and you will be provided with all of the necessary riding gear for your trip.

Icelandic horses hold a special place in the heart of the nation, having stood by the population through centuries of dark winters and social upheaval. Today, the isolation has kept the breed unique amongst horses, so much so that any horse that leaves the island can never return. Icelandic horses are known for their small, pony-like size, durability to the cold and their five unique tolts.

When you are finally ready to begin your adventure, you'll clamber atop your noble steed and take off into some of the most beautiful countrysides in Iceland. With distant mountainscapes, trickling glacial rivers, cascading waterfalls and steep cliff sides, this will be a horse ride that you'll never forget. The pace of this tour is a gentle gallop, meaning you will have plenty of opportunities to sit back, relax and appreciate your gorgeous surroundings.

As an added extra, most guests on this tour like to try their hand at the traditional cableway over the glacial river, Jökulsá, winching themselves across the water in what promises to be one of the most exhilarating segments of the trip.

At the end of your trip, you will return to the farm from where you are welcome to try some authentic Icelandic food at our homestyle restaurant or set out to explore some of the regions' many picturesque hiking trails. The choice is yours.

So don't delay any longer! Hurry now, and you too can experience the joys of horse riding through Iceland's gorgeous and eclectic countryside. Check availability by choosing a date.

This horseback riding tour was fantastic! Our guide was quiet but responsive to our questions. The horses were friendly and well-behaved. The scenery (a valley with a small river flowing through it dotted with the ever-present Icelandic sheep) was beautifully serene, and the cableway over the river was a fun and unique experience. The duration of the tour was just right - long enough for an amateur to get comfortable on the horse, but not so long that you were left hurting for the next few days. The Wilderness Center of Iceland is away from the main road, but not difficult to access in a 2WD compact rental car. (Allow for an almost-1hr drive from Egilsstadir in good weather.) This company offers a great customer experience.
