Explore the magical world inside of a glacier on this once in a lifetime journey. Recently opened tunnels, carved into the most stable part of Europe’s second-largest glacier, Langjökull, make this unbelievable opportunity possible. This tour is perfect for those wanting to adventure into the insides of a glacier and witness an attraction like no other.
The tour departs from our Langjökull base camp called Klaki. The base camp is located in a 30 minute driving distance from Húsafell. Once gathered, you will get into an impressive, all-terrain, eight-wheel-drive monster truck, and head up the slopes of Langjökull glacier, over an ethereal world of ice and snow. Note that to get to Klaki base camp, you have to drive an F-road, so make sure that your rental car is allowed on F-roads (road F550). If your rental car is not 4×4 then we highly recommend booking the tour from Húsafell.
The passing scenery on this drive is magnificent, so keep your camera close at hand. The landscapes unfolding beneath you are truly stunning, and the endless surface of the glacier so barren and beautiful that it seems otherworldly. Once you reach the top of the snowy expanse you’ll see an array of pristine mountains all around you as you continue on your journey through this spectacular white tundra landscape.
You will then reach the entrance to the ice tunnels. Your guide will tell you to put your crampons on before guiding you into the awe-inspiring blue and white ice cave inside the icecap. For an hour, you will follow your experienced guide as they tell you all about Iceland’s glaciers, how they are changing and how these incredible tunnels were created. Be sure to come prepared with your questions - your knowledgable guide will be more than happy to answer.
Iceland is the only place in the world where such impressive passages into the ice have been built for the purpose of welcoming visitors. While natural ice caves do form on the lower parts of other glaciers during winter, they are notoriously unreliable due to flooding, and often too unstable to enter. Conversely, the ice tunnel in Langjökull is open year-round, and accessible in all but the most tumultuous of weather conditions.
The tunnel is well lit throughout, and the ground is relatively even, so this tour is more than doable for anyone comfortable on their feet for an hour or so. Whether young or old, fit or unfit, the Langjökull ice tunnel is sure to blow you away. Exploring the passages and taking some well-earned snaps of the varying colours in the ice makes the visit a breathtaking experience.
Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity. Buckle up for a fascinating and magnificent ice tunnel experience.
