4-Hour Into the Glacier Experience with Glacier Hiking & Ice Caving with Transfer from Skaftafell

Combine a glacier hike with a visit to a natural ice cave on this tour from Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park. You hike on Falljokull Glacier, an outlet glacier of Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Europe.

From the booking center in Skaftafell, a 4x4 bus takes you on a 20-minute drive to Falljokull Glacier.

When you arrive, you gear up with crampons, a helmet, a harness, and an ice axe. Your guide gives you a safety briefing and shows you simple crampon techniques before you step onto the ice.

As you hike up the glacier, your guide points out deep crevasses and bright blue ice formations and explains how the glacier moves and changes through the seasons. The hike covers about 1.9 miles (3 kilometers), with 656 to 820 feet (200 to 250 meters) of elevation gain, and starts with a steep section.

Then you reach the ice cave. Ice caves form in winter, when the water in the rivers beneath the glacier freezes, and new caves appear in different places each year. The cave you visit is chosen based on the conditions and safety that day. You have time to step inside, explore, and take photos while your guide explains how the caves form.

Then the 4x4 bus takes you back to Skaftafell.
