Let your kids meet and learn about the gentle, calm and well-trained Icelandic horse with this 45-minute children's horse riding lesson. This is a fun and interactive way for children to learn about the unique animals, and for parents to learn with them. Animal lovers travelling in northern Iceland should not let this opportunity pass them by.
You'll meet your guide at a guesthouse just outside the town of Akureyri in North Iceland. The guide will first introduce the children to the horses by taking them to a nearby field where they will help round up the horses and bring them back to the corral.
Then they will help brush and saddle the horses which will give them time to get used to being around the animals. The child will then get into the saddle, and the guide will teach them the commands to make the horse go and stop, and how to turn right or left. After that, the guide will lead the horse by the reigns around the corral.
If the child feels comfortable enough, the guide might take the horse by the reigns and lead them down to a beach where they can ride around the fjord. After that, they can try and go a short distance alone if they'd like. They'd travel along a nearby horse path or perhaps a little further, depending on their age and experience.
Be prepared that your kid's clothes can get dirty and remember that in Iceland - even in summer - it can be cold, windy and rainy. So do not forget to take warm clothes, to enjoy this fantastic adventure!
After the lesson, the whole family is welcome in the guesthouse to relax. There is free tea, coffee and cake, and you’re welcome to unwind in the onsite hot tub where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the surrounding fjords.
