Epic 8 Hour Super Jeep Tour of Lakagigar Craters & Fjadrargljufur Canyon from Kirkjubaejarklaustur

Jump aboard a Super Jeep and see some spectacular, unique, little-travelled locations in Iceland's South and Southern Highlands. This tour will show you the craters of Lakagígar and Tjarnargígur, the waterfall Fagrifoss, and the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon.

This tour begins and ends in the southern town of Kirkjubæklaustur, a historic and beautiful settlement. You will be picked up in a Super Jeep with a maximum capacity of twelve, to help ensure the excursion is comfortable and personalised.

Your first stop is the Laki craters, which sit in the shadow of Mount Laki. You will disembark, and your guide will allow you two and a half hours to hike through the area. This is enough time to reach the summit of Laki, to see the craters and lakes from above, as well as spectacular views over the Highlands.

If you are not comfortable hiking to the top of Laki, your guide will drive you to the top of some nearby hills where you will attain similar vistas.

Your next stop is another crater, Tjarnargígur, this one with a permanent lake inside, and a platform that grants you spectacular views over it. From here, you will have an hour-long hike through the surrounding lava fields, for more chances to look over the majestic Highlands.

Next, you will head to a little-known waterfall, Fagrifoss, where you will have half an hour to explore and photograph the site. You will be grateful for this, as the name of this feature translates literally to 'beautiful falls'.

Finally, you'll reach Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, a ten-thousand-year-old feature carved out in the last Ice Age. You'll walk along its higher end, looking down into the stunning azure river rushing below, and across to its verdant cliffs.

With these sites complete, you will return to Kirkjubæklaustur.
