Description
Take flight from Skaftafell by Vatnajökull glacier, right under Iceland's tallest mountain, Hvannadalshnjúkur. You'll visit amazing Highland sights such as Landmannalaugar, Lakagígar and Laki craters, Eldgjá, and Langisjór Lake on this amazing aerial journey.
Your flight will depart from the airport at Skaftafell Terminal, a short way from the visitor centre, at the edge of the nature reserve.
As you take off, you'll be able to see Skaftafell from above, and admire a lush green area so beautiful it was once considered its own National Park, before the creation of the much greater Vatnajökull Park. You'll continue over Skeiðarárjökull glacier tongue with a marvellous view over the ink black sands and white ice.
After that, you'll fly towards the mountain Laki and over the dramatic but beautiful area of the Lakagígar craters, a 25 km long volcanic fissure known for causing the largest volcanic discharge ever witnessed.
From Lakagígar you'll fly over the colourful area of Landmannalaugar, a beautiful valley in the Icelandic highlands, and a beloved oasis of the natives. In the old days, people travelling across the highlands would stop here to rest and bathe in the hot springs that the valley takes its name from. After a spin over Landmannalaugar and the nearby Mýrdalsjökull glacier, it is time to return to Skaftafell. If the weather is good you might even see all the way to Hekla volcano.
On the way back you'll fly over Eldgjá canyon. At 40 km long and nearly 300 meters in depth, this is the world's largest volcanic canyon, and home to the waterfall Ófærufoss. You'll then head to Skaftafell again, embraced by the glacial mountains of Vatnajökull.
All of these places are some of the most delightful in Iceland to visit on foot. To be able to see them in all their glory from the sky is an opportunity so incredible it must be experienced to be believed.
