Landmannalaugar in a small group

This trip is an unforgettable journey to Iceland's highlands and to one of the most beautiful landscapes in Iceland. On the way to Landmannalaugar we drive through the amazing Þjórsárdalur Valley, which is covered by white pumice, from nearby volcanoes, such as Hekla, Grímsnes and Vatnaöldur volcanic systems. The beautiful waterfall Þjófafoss, with mountain Búrfell in the background, is a beautiful scene and stop on our way to Landmannalaugar.

An explosion crater called Ljótipollur is one of our stops before we arrive in Landmannalaugar. Explosion craters are caused by an unusual amount of water vapour, from the groundwater, in the magma. The eruption leaves a crater, a hole in the ground, and they often fill with water, creating strange, round or oval lakes.

Landmannalaugar and the surrounding nature reserve is one of the most beautiful geological landscapes of Iceland. The landscape resembles a painting or a scene in a fairy tale, with beautifully coloured bright green, yellow and pink rhyolitic mountains with patches of black shiny obsidian. Landmannalaugar is a geothermally active area with a natural pool, that many travellers bath in. Remember your swimsuit for this trip!

Háifoss waterfall is the third highest in Iceland, after Glymur and an inaccessible waterfall in Morsárjökull glacier. We enjoy the waterfall from above on the other site of the mountain top. This is a magical stop.

Hjálparfoss is a beautiful waterfall, split into two separate falls that join at the base and into a small lagoon. The waterfall is surrounded by beautiful basalt columns and formations. The name of the waterfall, Hjálparfoss, means "The helping waterfall", where "hjálp" signifies "help". The name originates from the old days when people, riding horses over the harsh landscape of the Sprengisandur Highlands, came to this green and relatively lush area, which served as a great help for their horses to graze and recover from the difficult ride.
