Daily itinerary
Day 1 - Gljufrabui base – Landmannalaugar – Alftavatn
It's Day 1 of your grand hiking adventure; you will be starting early from the base besides Gljúfrabúi waterfall, from where you will head straight towards the kaleidoscopic hillsides of Landmannalaugar, world famous for its incredible hiking routes.
As soon as you arrive, you will strap on a backpack, tie the laches of your hiking boots and head out immediately through the geothermal landscapes of Landmannalaugar, aiming for the day's final destination, Lake Álftavatn.
On the way, you'll be sure to pass the obsidian desert, Hrafntinnusker, as well as Mt. Reykjaföll and the picturesque Jökultungur area. You will be spending the night at accommodation beside Lake Álftavatn.
Day 2 - Alftavatn - Emstur
On your second day, you will leave the overnight hut after a decent breakfast and a worthy night’s rest. After all, there's still so much left to be discovered!
You will continue on the Laugavegur trail, heading towards Emstrur. This part of the trail is "easier" than the day before, taking you directly through black sand deserts and in the shadow of fantastic mountains such as Stórasúla and Hattfell. You will then reach the hut in Emstrur (Botnar) where the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull lie extended before you.
When dinner is finished, there is an optional evening hike towards the magnificent 200-meter high canyon, Markarfljótsgljúfur. That's an evening hike that you don't want to miss!
Day 3 - Emstrur – Þorsmork – Seljalandsfoss / Gljufrabui base
It is your third and final day on the epic Laugavegur trek and, by now, you'll have a good idea of just how amazing the Icelandic Central Highlands really are. In the morning, you will leave Emstrur and continue on your way to the geothermal valley of Þórsmörk. Throughout this journey, you will be walking alongside the glittering natural jewel, Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
As you descend into the valley, you'll begin to note changes in the landscape. For example, the abundance of trees at Þórsmörk begins to overwhelm the scenery and is a sure sign that you've trekked your way close to the coastline.
With the Laugavegur trail now behind you, it is now easy to sit back and bask in the beautiful oasis that is Þórsmörk. Throughout your time here, you will have the mighty, infamous Eyjafjallajökull stratovolcano looming overhead.
From Þórsmörk, you'll head back towards Gljúfrabúi base, but there is still one more stop, the magnificent Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of the jewels of the South Coast.
