Description

Come and explore the wonders of the North with this luxury, multi-day guided tour, with stops at such fantastic sites as Lake Mývatn, the charming town of Akureyri and such natural attractions as waterfalls, lava fields and geothermal springs.

This is the perfect tour opportunity for those travellers looking to discover a side of Iceland less visited than the South, and for those who are looking to truly maximise their time in the country with amazing sights, sounds and experience. This tour also provides the opportunity to add on a bonus adventure activity such as whale watching, horseback riding and even dog sledging.

Your adventure will begin by getting picked up from your accommodation in Iceland's picturesque capital city, Reykjavík. From there, you will be whisked towards the wilds of the North, passing quintessential farmlands, rugged coastlines and towering mountains. Prepare for the journey of your lifetime.

Along the way, you will stop at Iceland's "Capital of the North", Akureyri, a vibrant and cultured town surrounded by dramatic fjords. Afterward, you head to Lake Mývatn, an area of staunch beauty that boasts a dark and cragged volcanic landscape, as well as the nearby Dimmuborgir ("Dark Fortress") and the geothermally-active Námaskarð pass.

You will also look upon the gargantuan powerhouse that is Dettifoss waterfall, a roaring and dramatic curtain of cascading water that holds the proud title of Europe's most powerful waterfall. After your time at the waterfall, you may choose to head to the whale watching capital of Iceland, Húsavík, a town renown for its scenic vistas and excellent potential for seeing rare cetacean species.

Alternatively, you could choose to partake in a wealth of other tour opportunities, ranging from hiking to boat trips to dog sledging, given the season. Whatever you choose, you'll sure to be provided with a lifetime of memories!

As the third day begins to roll to an end, you will make the return journey back to your accommodation... though, fear not, there will be plenty of chances to stop and take photographs of the passing scenery.

So what are you waiting for? Hurry now and you too can experience Iceland's northern majesty, with the added opportunity to compliment your sightseeing with a unique adventure. Check availability by choosing a date.

Daily itinerary

Day 1
Hvítserkur, the 'Troll of the North West' (though many claim it's an elephant!)

Day 1 - Reykjavík: Akureyri:

On your first day, you will head out from Reykjavik, driving along the picturesque Road nr 1 towards Borgarfjordur, passing coastal fishing villages and charming agricultural areas.

After enjoying the passing scenery, you will stop for a spot of lunch, then visit the distinctive, 15-metre high rock stack Hvítserkur, on the eastern shores of the Vatnsnes, as well as the scenic waterfall, Kolugjúfur.

Afterward, you will head on into Iceland's northern capital, Akureyri, a town famed for its rich cultural heritage and gorgeous surrounding scenery. Here, you can enjoy a relaxed dinner, a browse around the shops and even sample the eclectic nightlife. You will spend your first night at accommodation in Akureyri, only to be picked up again the next morning.

Day 2
Goðafoss is widely considered to be one of the country's most beautiful and historically important waterfalls.

Day 2 - Mývatn: Dettifoss: Husavik:

Your second day sees you enjoying the charms of the Diamond Circle sightseeing route, starting with Goðafoss waterfall, named as such because this is where the ancient Pagan settlers threw their golden idols upon adopting Christianity in 1000 AD.

Next, you will likely head to what is widely considered to be Iceland's whale watching capital, Husavik, for a chance to spot the incredible cetacean species that live in the coastal waters around the country.

After a bite of lunch, you will head to the picturesque Lake Myvatn, known for its sublime natural beauty. There are a number of interesting attractions around the lake, such as Dimmuborgir ("Dark Fortress"), a cragged and naturally formed rock formation that—as the name suggests—looks like a black, fantastical castle.  You will also see the bubbling mud cauldrons of Leirhnjúkur and even the horseshoe-shaped canyon of Ásbyrgi.

You will spend the night at accommodation in the area.

Day 3
Your third and final day will be filled with amazing sights, sounds and experiences.

Day 3 - Husavik: Akureyri: Reykjavík:

This is the third and final day of your sightseeing adventure, but the action hasn't stopped yet! On your return journey to the capital city, you will stop at a list of designated attractions, as chosen by the driver; these could be anything, from dramatic dried lava plateaus to ancient volcanoes and waterfalls. Make sure to snap any remaining photographs you're hoping to capture.

You will arrive back at your accommodation in the late-afternoon/early evening, where you will have the chance to sit back and fondly appreciate your adventure or, alternatively, head out to town for an entirely new one.
