Description
Explore the beautiful nature of the Westfjords on this immersive nine-hour day tour, where you'll see the abundant wildlife at Latrabjarg cliffs and Raudasandur beach. Those traveling to this remote region in Iceland who want to discover areas of hidden gems and fantastic surrounding fjords should not miss this tour.
You'll meet your guides in Patreksfjordur, a charming fishing village close to many of the Westfjords' most popular attractions. The town is approximately a two-hour drive from the region's unofficial capital, Isafjordur.
At Patreksfjordur, you'll board a large jeep and take a quick tour of the town before making your way to Latrabjarg cliff. As you jump from one destination to another, the guide will share exciting information and stories about Iceland. Don't hesitate to ask them questions anytime.
Latrabjarg is Europe's largest bird cliff with a length of 8.7 miles (14 kilometers) and a height of 1446 feet (441 meters). The cliffs have rugged edges carved by millennia of waves, wind, and geological processes. A significant portion of it is covered in patches of lush green mosses and grasses in summer.
Latrabjarg is most famous for its millions of seabirds during the breeding season. Puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes, guillemots, northern gannets, and other bird species nest in the area mainly from May to September.
The guide will take you to a prime viewing spot to observe these beautiful birds without disrupting their habitat.
Your expert driver will maneuver the car up steep hills and rough, high-altitude roads as you travel between destinations. As you drive along these scenic passes, you'll get a spectacular view of the surrounding inlets, fjords, and your next destination, Raudasandur beach.
Raudasandur is one of the most iconic beaches of Westfjords and Iceland. It features stretches of golden and red sands edged by high cliffs on one side and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean on the other.
The color of the beach changes depending on the weather conditions. In the summer's sun, the sand is dazzling red, getting its color from crushed scallop shells.
While exploring the beach, keep an eye out for the area's plentiful wildlife. You might spot a seal or two with luck and the right conditions.
On this Westfjords itinerary, you'll also make a stop at the Heritage Museum at Hnjotur, where a large US Navy plane sits in the front yard. There, you'll see a unique display of old items showcasing the area's fishing history, farming, and everyday life.
At the museum, you will also learn about the rescue of a British trawler that stranded at Latrabjarg in 1947.
After a memorable day, you'll return to Patreksfjordur village in time for dinner.
